What I think happened was that there was a pricing mix-up with the Intel pass-through card (I recall receiving a quote for that, and it was precisely the same price: S$211 without tax).

I am not about to tell Dell that they made this mix-up with my previous purchase, lest they charge me an extra grand or so, money which I don't currently have.

That makes sense. When they shipped you the RTX 3000 did they attach it to your system warranty? You may want to hang on to the P3200 in case the RTX card ever had an issue. Usually spare parts only carry a 90-day warranty when purchased.

Also, Dell can request that you return the system to its original hardware state before performing warranty work if the tech believes that your modifications may be part of what is causing the problem.

I'm guessing nobody will go head with this upgrade now?

Indeed @Ionising_Radiation thanks for making the effort! I'm thankful you were able to quickly confirm that these kinds of upgrades can work for us. Maybe in the future they'll pop up on ebay for a reasonable price. :)

I'm sorry that it turned out this way, but, in all honesty... I was half-expecting this. Although one grand for an RTX 3000 really is quite unreasonable.

I put in eBay alerts and these showed up today.

    Quadro RTX 3000 (DGFF2) $1100 https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Preci...B-GDDR6-N19E-Q1-KA-A1-VIDEO-CARD/333338977094
    Quadro RTX 4000 (DGFF3) $1200 https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Preci...-GDDR6-N19E-Q3-A1-GPU-VIDEO-CARD/333338975085
    Quadro RTX 5000 (DGFF3) $1700 https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Preci...16GB-GDDR6-N19E-Q5-A1-VIDEO-CARD/233350086088

That's actually not a terrible deal on the 5000, cheaper than buying it from Dell. (Still well out of range of what I would consider for an upgrade.)

It'd be cheaper to spec out a system with Intel graphics only, and upgrade to the RTX 5000 by buying it from Ebay—about US$700 cheaper, in fact. But the RTX 4000 and 3000 are still insanely expensive.

Given that these GPUs have no hardware benefits over their GeForce brethren, there is no reason for the tripling in prices, except for the 'business tax'. One can get an RTX 2060 for ~US$350, and it runs around 20-30% faster than the RTX 3000, to boot.
