it wasn't actually ever necessary. i would always suggest as a general rule installing deeper drivers first (chipset, IMSM, etc.).

True, better to get the main things sorted first. It was just that Dell had a very specific list of this, but Vista was the last for that i think.
Got everything installed now and so far it's doing great. Win7 much smoother than Vista that was installed on it. To be honest it wasn't running the latest BIOS or other driver versions and had McAfee and stuff like that which seemed too cause some slowing down, especially boot sequence, MUCH faster now :D

There is a way to check what driver is at fault without disabling them one by one.

It worked for vista, so probably will work for 7 as well.
Had the same problem in Vista, that the Intel Matrix new driver solved.
    Good luck.

    nice find. rep added.

to clarify, however, you now need to download the entire windows 7 sdk. You can select only the 32 bit diagnostic tools, or install the entire thing. if anyone needs help, please let me know.

Not necessarily, veritas. Using the web installer, you can only download the 'Win32 Development Tools' (~43MB) which contain the xperf installer.

    thats what i said....
"you can select only the 32 bit tools" - admittedly i accidentally said diagnostic rather than development, but that was the point of my comment -- you can download that (or the entire sdk), but either way you have to use the web installer (you can also download the iso) which defaults to the entire thing, whereas before WPT was an entirely separate download.

given that the owners lounge is increasingly being used to ask windows 7 questions, and this forum has mostly stagnated at the moment, i once again ask a mod to close this forum with a link to owners lounge.

What do you use to monitor temperatures in Windows 7 64bit? I don't want fan control, just would like to see how hot it is...
