Any one having any problems with their video card(Quadro 160)? I've installed and uninstalled the drivers for it over and over again. Tried the one Dell provided, the one from NVIDIA. The setup that Dell provides doesn't even finish installation. I'd really try to get to watching videos in full without grainyness and have taskbar preview. Running the 64 bit version btw.

It seams you have a driver related problem. I don't have such issue. If the setup doesn't finish, that means there is probably a driver conflict or damaged registry. Try to return you system back in time to a restore point before you installed your Nvidia drivers (should not affect your files in your profile). Once done, uninstall them, use CCleaner to clean the registry, and use the latest BETA Nvidia drivers.

Thanks, man that actually worked. Drivers actually installed. Also, the grainyness of my vids were because of my codec pack.

you shouldn't need a codec pack at all on win7. what player are you using? id strongly suggest using vlc media player.

    VLC is no good.
What I recommend (well Veritas knows), SHark007 codec pack 32-bit and then 64-bit add-ons. As it allows you to "unlocks" Windows Media Player 11/12 64-bit, and doesn't interfere with Windows build-in codecs.. it just ads supported for other formats/encoding.

shark007 isn't bad, but what do you have against VLC? ive never had anything but great experiences with it. i'd be curious to hear your thoughts.

    No order of importance.
    • Doesn't integrate with the OS. It's a program used often.. it's a multimedia player in 2009. It's a like if you run a program that has an early MacOS UI into Windows 7... it just sticks out.
    • I have some video formats which doesn't play well with VLC, especially 1080p videos. The problem varies depending on the format.
    • DVD playback experience is not as great as Windows built-in one. For some reason it sometimes screws up when you jump to a location
    • Only in 32-bit
    • Video converting format needs some serious work. What I mean is not only it's not intuitive at all, but every time I try it, I end up with a converter video with some image quality. For instance 10px at the bottom of the video are the same, or I get a this strange grain on white tones.
    • This point I put several in the same one, as they are all linked. Volume bar looks like a heat indicators... will my computer explode if I put the volume to the red zone?. Also why the progress bar is a sliding bar. UI is not intuitive and confusing. Also, it's ugly... Windows 95 looks is long over.
    • No thumbnail preview on its format, nor provide the support to Windows 32 or 64-bit.

    Hey guys!

I just received my E6400 and i'm installing Win7 now. Do you still need to install the Dell drivers in a certain order or doesn't it matter any more?

You should. Some drivers won't be found by Windows 7, but most should be found. Moreover, already new versions for many components are out, and not yet available via Windows update. The most important components in your laptop are:
    - Motherboard (chipset drivers to be exact)
    - GPU
    - Wired/Wireless card

Also, if you want access the advance features such as turning off some devices while on battery automatically, or using Dell extended battery (set the screen to 16-bit color, Aero Baisc, 40Hz, and disables all devices), or want to change the brightness or timing of the backlit keyboard, you'll need Dell Control Point software. And the security software to have your finger print/card reader reader working.

That's not what i meant really but thanks ;)
Dell used to have a certain order in which drivers needed to be installed. I was just wondering if that's still the case because i heard that wasn't necessary with Win7.
