THANKS Radiophile! My sentiments exactly, but some of the threads I've read with other brands state the I7 620M is within a couple of degrees of the I5 520M. I'll search for the comments you referenced.

Hey I read your overview and others and found them enlightening. I live in an almost identical environment as you, matter of fact we're neighbors; I live in SC. Hence my concern for keeping things cool.

I should be joining the E6410 owners' club on Tuesday. A red one should be arriving on Tuesday from a UK ebay reseller of the Dell Outlet stock. The specs are fairly basic (i5 520M, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD) but it has a WXGA+ display, I fancied the red colour plus Intel graphics and PC card slot. I will swapping over the SSD from my E6400 but will have to go shopping for more RAM. Not cheap by Dell US outlet prices but over 1/3rd off the Dell UK website prices.

For anyone else looking around, there are some E6410s on ebay.UK, more at ITC sales and a few at Dell Outlet. The Outlet ones are the least expensive but the specifications are very sparse.

You have to use a GOBI 2 5620 (Part# DKYD6). I just tried to install the GOBI 1 5600 and the driver will not take. It just sits there with a yellow exclamation mark in device manager.

I have the WXGA+ screen with the Intel graphics and had a lot of hassles with my external monitor when I was connected via VGA. When the E6410 came out of sleep the monitor resolutions would be all over the place and had to be reset every time. When I switched to DisplayPort all of the problems disappeared. So I'm now quite happy with the higher res display.

Congrats John! I've been looking for a red one on the US outlet, so far no luck.

I'm not an I T guy, I've done no measurements, so this is only anecdotal.

But my e6410 has the i7-620M along with a SSD. This thing barely gets above room temperature it seems. Compared to my last laptop (an old D410 that had some issues) this one runs downright cool. I'm normally just doing basic work with it, Office stuff and internet, but the fan rarely runs at all, which along with the SSD makes this thing completely SILENT too.

Mine has the Intel graphics, don't know if that would make any difference with the heat

I notice it when I open Dell Control Point. or for a short time after I've closed it.
I haven't yet bothered to uninstall parts of it, as has been suggested on here...

Isn't that related to the DPC latency issues people have? If I open DPC latency checker up and then DCP, it skyrockets red and the computer REALLY lags. If I close the dell crapware, it lags for a few seconds and goes back to normal (dpc redlines occasionally but not nearly as much.) Someone on some dell forum said a new BIOS update is expected in September to fix this.

I have an I7 with integrated graphics and use it frequently in my shorts or skivies with it in my lap for hours on end. It is barely warm. FWIW
