Specifically which brand and model usb keyboard and usb mouse?

When (after) the usb keyboard/mouse stop responding, does Windows Device Manager still show them as enabled?

Any related events recorded in the System Event log?

(Long shot) Have you tested all available USB ports?

(Long shot) What happens when you modify the active power scheme such that the USB Selective Suspend Setting is disabled and then shutdown/startup?

I've decided to try it off the dock, nothing plugged into it except the USB keyboard and mouse it seemed to be rock solid. After 15-20 minutes it never had a single hiccup. I connected it to power and within a few minutes it started having issues. Not sure if it's tied somehow to a power option.

When it does begin happening it'll do it once every 30 seconds or so, but eventually the frequencies becomes more and more often until it happens almost non-stop. Also, when it occurs and I'm typing at first it will spit out many letters. If it happens when I'm pushing the letter k for example, it will spew out about 20 Ks.

Right now I've got the laptop just connected to the keyboard and mouse and am typing on the laptop using the external keyboard and it's been working fine. Not of course how I would like to be using it but a good way to test my theory.

I went ahead and made the adjustment to the USB power options but that didn't seem to do anything. Powered the system down and then back up and same problems. I also tried to set the Power Settings to High Performance and that didn't help either. I'm kind of wondering if there isn't a problem with the motherboard and USB devices when plugged into power. I'll need to check and see if the USB devices become unplugged/unseen in device manager when it's acting up.

So, two E6410s and one dock... USB does not bonk and does fail on one E6410 when docked, but not so for the other E6410 on same dock. I'd inspect the docking connectors and then call Dell to troubleshoot the problem E6410. It feels like a hardware/compatibility issue... no user tweak should be required to maintain basic USB operation.

I agree, it should just work. I plan to contact them tomorrow. One E6410 works perfect all the time regardless of the scenario. The other has problems if it is docked (with or without the power connected to the dock) or if it is undocked but with the power connected. If it is undocked and no power it works great with the USB keyboard and mouse.

I'm thinking it's a bad motherboard but we'll see what Dell thinks. Thanks :)

    (More worthless suggestions...)

Compare the BIOS settings for the two laptops.

    In particular, look at:

    USB Emulation [Enable USB Emulation]

USB Wake Support [Enable USB Wake Support]

Sorry, can't remember the category names for these settings. Maybe POST Behavior?

Which brand/model usb keyboard and mouse?

    Hey guys,

I recently installed CPUID HWmonitor to try to see how fast my laptop fan is running. However, the software doesn't seem to be detected the fan. I also tried SpeedFan and had no luck. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Or is the type of fan just not compatible with these kind of software?

    You might try HWinFO32.

It will display a line item for the fan RPM in the sensor status display, IF THE FAN IS RUNNING.

Thanks alot! HWinFO32 worked perfectly and provides much more information than HWmonitor. I had not realized that the fan actually stops running. I thought the fans would run at a slower idle speed
