Okay great so we know they at least have a Samsung and an LG display, and wouldn't be surprized if there was more variation.

    Any one else check theirs?

you can check it by going start > run > type: 'devmgmt.msc' > click monitors > dbl. click your monitor > details > hardware ids

curious how many their are and to see what type people have that aren't happy with their display

still don't know which panel i have, but some further digging in this thread yields differing opinions, even on the LGD0257 alone... so it may not be the different panels producing the range of opinions.

perhaps I'm just being too picky, but i am a fan of being able to see the entire screen at (relatively) consistent color and brightness from one position... the only way i can get this with mine is to look down at it steeply enough that the entire image is washed out.

My E6410 has an LGD0257 WXGA+ 14.1" 16:10 1440x900 LED LCD, as reported in Device Manager under the monitor hardware id detail. Looks as good as if not better than my E6400 SEC5442 WXGA+ 14.1" 16:10 1440x900 LED LCD. No complaints here... not bad for a notebook.

As the notebook boots and the screen is ON but with no image, I tilt it back until it presents the most uniform blackness without any highlights. Then when the image appears, its as good as it gets, save tweaking the brightness.

Can anyone explain how a proper display calibration is done, presumably with external equipment?

So, you haven't heard my story about order M11xR2 which in the manual state it have gigabit ethernet, but it doesn't. And another that I have point out and warn people that Dell mis-advertised Vostro 3300 as 1920x1080 screen when it's only 1366x768 right about the same time frame.

    I ordered brand new.

IMO, if your equivalent display is not immediately acceptable, you should go back to Dell. My displays are so passible that there is no question that they are premium usable LCD displays... bright, brilliant, flawless images that admittedly and expectedly fall off when you vary your viewing angle beyond the narrow ideal.

i'll wait until i get home tonight and fiddle some more / check out what panel i have, but i think i'll try to get dell to send me a new screen. do you think that be as easy as getting a new keyboard, or is "it doesn't look good" not going to be enough this time?

disappointing to say the least. I'm still waiting to hear back from my Dell rep regarding this. The machines otherwise seem fine, just these slow drives will be unacceptable for my users.
