I've just tried the latest IDT driver plus the SRS control panel. There is definitely an improvement on the internal speakers, but it is not massive becuse of the challenge of getting bass out of half inch tweeters.

I can't get to any advanced settings in the IDT control panel: Click on the cog wheel button does nothing.

I have a 7200rpm 250gb drive. I think it's a Western Digital. Could it be the hard drive? It doesn't sound like a HD though..

It's an OEM router supplied by the ISP and not any well known brand.

The WiFi is already set to Highest power when connected to the mains and none of the settings were changed manually in that period.

But what I find strange is that the problem started 5 days after I first started using the headset. Until then everything worked normally.

I'm now begining to think that the BT card itself may be defective.

What you are hearing is the hard disk platters that whips the air. All 7200RPM on a laptop does that.

After playing with the settings by setting them to Large and playing with SRS settings I was able to get descent sound out of them. You just have to play with them. I am not quiet there... but still playing with the options.

See attachment for the new panel and some settings where I am.
I am undecided between Game + Headphones or what you see on the picture.
My problem is with rock music... again still playing with the options.

p.s: "optimize Base" under settings does not work... well I can't really hear the difference even with the headphones..

Ha ha ha ha oh dear, I feel so foolish. This is my first laptop with a 7200rpm drive.

    Thanks everyone for your help.

Really random issue here...I forgot to install the touchpad drivers when I did a clean install of Vista. So I installed them off the Dell driver's CD. However, I've somehow lost the ability to use the scrollbar on the touchpad recently even though nothing has changed...and I can't redownload the driver from Dell, apparently that file download link is broken. I'll try installing it again from the CD.

Dell shipped a Seagate Momentus 7200.3 160GB 7200RPM HDD in my E6400. It's quiet. It does not sound like a fan; I can only faintly hear the head ticking.

If you compare the power and acoustic specs for the various 5400 and 7200 Momentus builds, you will see that although these may vary slightly, they do not vary consistently by RPM. Some of the 5400RPM units consume the most power; and generally speaking, all are acoustically similar. Given this one sample, I suggest that you can not generalize HDD power and acoustic performance by RPM rating. I understand why it seems reasonable to do so, but the specs and my relevant experience suggest otherwise.

Further, I have a 300GB 2.5" 10,000RPM WD Velociraptor that I can barely hear with my ear up real close while it's running chkdsk (HDD LED on solid). 10,000RPM drives use to scream; not this drive.

So, I think if your E6400 HDD drive sounds like a fan, then you've got a noisey drive, but not because it's rated 7200RPM. And if you want a faster E6400, order a faster HDD... if you are concerned about HDD power and acoustics, you'll have to know the build specs to make an informed choice.

you will get problems whenever the Bluetooth is looking around trying to find devices. if it is paired and silent, it should not interfere enough to knock out the wifi. try turning off visibility of both, and see that it is not searching for devices.

also, it might not be the bluetooth at all, it could be environmental interference. are you anywhere near a microwave, or has someone in your vicinity started using 2.4Ghz phones?
