if i were you, and you dont have a good reason not to, id strongly consider installing build 7057 of win 7.

No, because Win7 is not finally out, same for the drivers.

I offered you a solution before Kazaam.
I said you can set these services to automatically restart when they fail. Just open the services.msc, double click on the service that cause issue, and go under the "Recovery" tab. This should patch the problem until you decide to re-install Vista with the latest drivers properly following Dell instructions for the other of drivers to install.

how is it not being finally out a reason not to consider it as an alternative? it is, in its current state, superior to both xp and vista.

Sorry guys! I got confused between left and right. :(
The left speaker grid is attached to the palm rest. The right one is easy to remove, repair, change.
All you have to do is:
    - Remove the optical drive module.
    - Remove the bottom panel plate by unscrewing the only center screen.
    - Then if you look at the slot of the optical drive you will notice 2 screws. These screws can't be removed they are attached to the base. so don't worry if they fall off... they can't (like the screw on the bottom panel of the laptop).
    - Unscrew them, and gentilly pull off the speaker grid. Not that the speaker grid has 2 snap attach on the top and bottom, so be careful. You can adjust the speaker grid and put it back.

It is best not too. As there is still bugs and that there are no official drivers, and currently no Dell support (despite being like Vista).
It is not important if you or I decided to run Win7 as the main OS, but recommended one... which has system problems to use something experimental is not wise.

    Hi again.

    Some more questions:

    1. Could you guys run the DPC Latency analyzer and post the results graph? I would like to see if this computer is good for audio recording/mixing. Thanks! The tool is found here: http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml

    2. Who is the manufacturer of the FireWire chipset in E6400? Is it Texas Instruments (TI), Ricoh, NEC, VIA, etc.? Could you please check yours?

    Thanks!

none. It uses a magnesium alloy which is apparently better than Aluminum for strength.
The only plastic part is the optical drive door, screen frame, keyboard and palm rest (speaker grid in aluminum).

I am not convinced that the little IDT sound card for this laptop was designed for professional recording. But I do record classes perfectly with this laptop thanks to the digital mic.
You are better off getting an external sound card for such purposes.

I believe, Rocoh is the company of the Firewire chip, if I am not mistaken.
