It's probably a corrupted registry... Corrupted registry can have strange effects. My experience is every time you try to install/update a drive Windows output a message "Error 2". That's it, and the setup fails after you click on OK.

On a related note, I installed the latest Dell System Software, dated 3/18/09 I believe, and got a BSOD. This is on the E6400, Vista Ultimate 64, Nvidia graphics.

Like GoodByes said..the connection manager is useless! It doesn't even support WiFi out of the box, you have to jump through hoops to enable it. It's really a huge waste of time for Vista.

Btw, on a good note, on my second call to Dell I was able to get Customer Care to send me out a copy of Vista 64 bit! :p

    Just got my E6400.
    1. Really good build quality. Solid. Thinkpad is just little bit better than E6400. Hey, Thinkpad is MORE expensive than E6400.
    2. It doesnt have Windows Vista Discs. Need to call tech. for the disc.
    3. The WIFI switch is worn. but, fine, I can live with it.
    4. LCD is good quality. I mean, compare to my T60. but cant beat my X61t IPS screen.

So, I am gonna install Win7.... But, what driver do i need to download? coz the total driver size is around 1.2GB.

I was considering a T400...but the deal I managed to get with the E6400 won me over. However, the T400 probably has a lot more GPU power than the NVS 160M. Either way, I'm happy once I get my replacement.

Drivers can be awkward sometimes. I presume the new driver that caused you problems was direct from Intel. Can you restore the OS to an earlier date? Otherwise you may be able to manually bypass the installer by using the options on the driver page in device manage.

More likely software than hardware, IMO.

    John-

Yep, the driver was direct from intel. i reinstalled the dell one and after the initial problems, everything is straightened out now. At first i got a weird error i have not yet seen, but its gone. Thanks for the information and opinions, they definitely help. I too think this is all more software than hardware related. there are no huge issues really, so either way its not a big deal. im looking forward to installing Win 7 whenever it comes out.

Btw, dell is sending me a replacement keyboard because of dimming LED lights (the LEDs are starting to get dimmer, not just in the top middle) and a weird pointer stick...the customer service really has been phenomenal.

Just curious...how much does an SSD cost? Like a 128GB one (and a 200gb one). its something im strongly considering!

Really depends if you want a nice one or a not-so-nice one. There are cheap MLC drives that'll run you about $200 for 120GB, but they really won't perform too well as a boot drive. For about $300 (if you look hard) you can get a nice Samsung MLC, which, while not the fastest thing on the planet, will do the job well. Go even higher and you can get like a 160GB Intel X25-M, etc.

Something I have noticed recently, perhaps since the latest DCP, is that when I start Google Earth the volume control on-screen display shows up for a few seconds. Weird!
