Looks like I spoke too soon -- guess it may NOT be a software issue! I'll try your suggestions when I get a chance. Thanks for the input!

See the attached for the evidence.

I would consider Transcend to be a reputable brand - I've used several Transcend modules in the past without any problems. However you may have a bad module. Memtest86 is one way forward. I think the Dell diagnostics also include RAM testing (press F12 at BIOS spash screen to get the menu).

I thought you said you had a brand new HDTV? That Samsung is 3 years old, released in April 2006. I went to the Samsung support site and read the user's manual. IT EXPLICITLY SAYS DVI/HDMI INPUT DOES NOT SUPPORT PC CONNECTION!

So if the user's manual is correct, you can only input DVD player type of resolution into HDMI, meaning either 720p or 1080i, and both those are not at your TV's native resolution of 1366x768. You are stuck with VGA if you want to get 1366x768. Although I would also try the other HDMI input just to be certain. On some Samsung TV's, one of the three or four HDMI's is the preferred one for PC's.

There is nothing wrong with the DP and the HDMI adaptor on the E6400. It is not useless. You need a new TV.

You can set the default brightness in the Power Options settings. Do you have those set at the middle? Maybe after sleep, your laptop is going back to the defaults. Just change those to a lower level.

Are there memory timing settings in the BIOS that you can adjust? What is the OS?

Since we're speaking of pulling triggers on E6400s, I did the same three days ago. After reading up on multiple user experiences online, most of them from here, I made my decision. So kudos to you all :)

I went pretty much flat out on the specs:

    Intel Core 2 Duo T9800 (2.93GHz,1066MHz,6MB)
    4096MB (2x2048) 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel
    14.1in Widescreen WXGA+ (1440X900) with LED backlit
    NVIDIA Quadro NVS 160M, 256MB
    Hard Drive: No Hard Drive
    8X DVD-ROM Drive & 24X CD+/-RW Combo Drive
    6-cell 54W/HR LI-ION
    Intel WiFi Link 5300 (802.11 a/g/n 3X3)
    Fingerprint Reader
Integrated 0.3 Mega Pixel Camera with Microphone
    E-Port+ Advanced Docking

I made the order over the phone, which made it possible to not get a hard drive and OS. Didn't want to pay for that when I plan to place a SSD in there and run Linux and Win 7 in dual boot, anyway.

And yes; I am very excited :)
