You can change the rubber thing of the touchpoint. However, the device itself is from the keyboard. So, that would be a new laptop keyboard that has magically the same pin configuration and spacing between each pins, and have the exact same size.

I would start with the Newegg and leave Transcend as the fallback option.

the blue touchpoint is not that easy to control. I tried to take off my thinkpad red touchpoint and replace the blue one. sadly, it doesnt work. I hope there is a aftermarket touchpoint on ebay.

definitely second this. newegg is very good about RMAs except on cell phones. if you end up returning the brand, kingston also makes very good ram.

in addition, i should add that it is much more rigid. so unless something changes, its between a better backlight or a better trackpoint. ahhh!!

2 reasons that might have been a bad idea, one you can keep it and run it as either a spare or as a second HDD with the media bay thing from IBM, OR, you could sell it. What was the discount for no HDD anyway? $20?

    ****Note****

I installed both those updates and one of them stops my computer hibernating. I think its the webcam update so I uninstalled it and now things seem to be OK. Google indicates that a Creative webcam update distributed via windows update has the same effect. Dell, while slow to add updates to their download site, don't seem to have noticed this bug.

The options you present are valid, but personally I'm not sure I would have wanted to go through with any of them.

According to the salesman at Dell I saved around $100-110 when not opting for HDD & Vista. However these numbers are tied to the Norwegian currency, which is strong (i.e. everything is expensive, but then again salaries are, high as well). An (pretty uneducated) estimate for the same discount in the US gives around $60-80, I'd think.
