I used to have a strange problem with Bluetooth and WiFi.
Using a bluetooth headset to chat on skype or another VOIP app caused the Wifi to disconnect. I had posted the problem here but nobody had an answer.

After a lot of time on Dell's premium rate support line (expecting a fat phone bill!), the problem was escalated. In the meantime, I had completely reinstalled Vista and all the drivers, updates and software but the problem stuck stubbornly. The technician finally had both the Intel WLAN 5100 card and the Dell BT370 cards replaced (quick job). And still the problem wasn't solved.

After some more discussion, the technician sent me the Dell WLAN 1510 card which I installed myself this afternoon. And finally, the problem seems to have disappeared. I'm not rejoicining yet; I prefer waiting a few days to confirm.

The technician said that they've never had anyone else report a similar problem nor has anyone here posted anything similar.

Does anyone else have problems with their Intel WLAN 5100 card? Has anyone done a comparison test of the Intel and Dell (Broadcom) WLAN cards?

I looked carefully at all the ADSL moden/router settings and there's nothing that could be adjusted to compensate for bluetooth. In any case, the modem/router is supplied by the ISP and is customised for them to include Internet, telephone and TV, so it's not like any off-the-shelf router.

    Here's a photo: [IMG]

Having tested for many more hours since I installed the Dell WLAN card, I must say it seems to have fixed the problem. So I put it down to differences between the Intel and Broadcom WLAN chips. Interestingly, there's a setting in the driver settings called Bluetooth Collaboration.

"Bluetooth Collaboration enables general purpose input/output transmit suppression protocol between the IEEE 802.11 media access control (MAC) and an external Bluetooth chip to minimize transmit interference. Bluetooth Collaboration is enabled by default."

There's no equivalent in the Intel driver though this does not necessarily mean that an equivalent automatic feature that the user can't control, doesn't exist.

the ability of a wireless router to do it is included in the hardware, but frequently not in the firm-ware. the option is available using dd-wrt firmware with any hardware it can be installed on.

I just ordered my E6400 from the outlet.

Price was decent at $779 + 54 tax and free shipping.

    Following the config:

    P9500
    4GB RAM
    Webcam
    DVD/RW
    Backlit keyboard
    WXGA+ (1440x900) LED
6 Cell Battery (9 cell portrudes from the rear right?)
    Wifi B/G
    120GB FJTSU-M160 5400 RPM HDD
    Standard Graphics

    No finger print reader
    No BT

I am gonna swap the Fujitsu HDD for my WD500 Scorpio Blue and may grab the BT adapter from Fleabay.

Got a couple quick questions though if anybody could help me out?

Are there two different webcams available on the E5400? I thought I read somewhere they were 2 mp...and I also just read the webcam sucks and is only .3 mp. How can I know form the Dell order confirmation which Webcam I have?

Reading some of the earlier posts, Dell semed to say specifically "backlit keyboard"...my order confirmation does say that but when i emailed the Dell rep said system I bought had it.

Can anyone tell me what to look for in the confirmation list of stuff?

    Thanks!
