Thanks Vikram...my specs are really similar to the one UPenn quoted. Hopefully I can fix the majority of my issues...I really like this laptop otherwise!

Question: Is there anyway to add the "cell modem" to the laptop after you take delivery? I remember "back in the day" I could change the video card on my old Inspiron 8100. Can I add the modem card into this bad boy?

Also: How can you tell if you have a Samsung or LG display?

    1. I'm sure the answer is yes to the cell modem. Read the service manual.

    2. The display type is under the Hardware ID in the properties of the Plug and Play monitor in Device Manager. LPL = LG-Philips, SEC = Samsung.

I wanted to add I solved my own problem with the unknown device...it was an adapter driver for the DisplayLink driver for one of the USB/DVI adapters. I think just posting the list of things has helped me sort these issues out one at a time. Does anyone else have it take awhile to get the prompt to authenticate during preboot authentication? It's on average around 60 seconds when my D630 was instant...I am baffled.

I had that slow POST happen yesterday morning. that's the first time I remember it doing that and, so far, it hasn't happened again.

    John

PS: It has happened again. Is this a feature of BIOS A06?

The only slow POST I have had is the initial boot and after I installed my RAM.

The generic Intel Display drivers will work on the E6400, so it may likely fix the blank screen issues.

Btw, with my machine, I can't switch to ACHI from IRRT without a reformat or recovery.

OK, So I was unhappy with my E6400 that I got, the SEC screen was horrible.I just felt bad that I had saved $501 on the E6400, and I was going to lose those savings.I decided to try a Precision M2400.I configured an exact one to the E6400 and saved it in my cart, at the time the M2400 was $315 off .I called Dell and told them the E6400 is coming back but I want a different computer, the Rep went into my cart pulled up the M2400 and I told him the whole story , how the E6400 screen was bad and I neeeded $200 MORE off the M2400 in order to get it.He puts me on hold tells me he's gotta speak to his boss.Sure enough after a 5 minute wait , he tells me it was approved for the extra $$ off , So I got $516 off the Precision M2400 which made it a little more than a $100 more than the E6400.

I just got my M2400 , as soon as i turned it on and saw the Dell logo on the black/gray background , I knew I got the LF/Phillips screen , it is so much nicer , brighter , and pleasant to look at than the Samsung .I guess I just got real lucky this time !!!!

My Samsung/SEC screen is excellent. Of course, I've never seen the LG/Philips one but the Samsung I got is great. Not grainy but sharp, good contrast. No complains with the screen overall! :)
