The Latitude Z 600 Review by Joebarchuck

    System Tested:
    Latitude Z600
    SU9400 @ 1.4Ghz
    2 Gb of RAM
    64Gb SSD
    Integrated Intel Graphic Card
    Resolution: 1600x900

Weight: 4.6 lbs or about 2 kg

First I want to say the following: yes the specs seem a bit on the low side but this PC is the World thinnest and lightest 16". At least for now...

    Size

    Measured by me:

    Width: 15.6"
    Depth: 10.7"
    Height: 0.59"

    Yes, that's a PENNY!

    First Impressions

Out of the box, the system looks amazing. Built quality is as good as the M17X from Alienware and better than a Mac Book Pro.

    9/10

    The Screen

The screen is absolutely amazing for a computer this small. The brightness of the screen is fabulous. Compared to my M1730 I would say it is twice as bright and the colors are vibrant. Compared to my M17X it is as bright but colors are better on the M17X.

    7/10

    Screen Resolution is 1600 X 900

The M170 on the left has a resolution of 1900x1200, the brightness is twice as less and the colors are not as well represented than the Latitude Z.

    The Chassis

Fabulous also... Light, sturdy, no cheap plastics used. The palm rest has a leather feel to it. No noise what so ever even when pressing hard on the side or the keys.

The touch sensitive buttons are great also. A million times better than the ones on the M17X. They vibrate, make a small noise and light up when touched.

There is no integrated DVD due to the size of course. For people like me which use a CD or DVD once in a blue moon, it won't be a problem.

    7/10

    The Speakers

Well let's be honest... They are not great.

    4/10

    The Keyboard

I love it. It's clean, the keys are well positioned, well spaced and light up evenly with a light white color. Typing on this PC is easy.

    8/10

    The Edge Touch

At first I thought it was useless but it's easy to get used to it and actually use it to start common apps like excel, word, or chrome.

    7/10

    Dell Face Ware

This system which lets you choose who can use the PC is not working properly yet.

It constantly monitors the face setup to be able to use the PC and will lock the PC if the face changes for more than 30 seconds. (Timing can be adjusted)

It recognizes your face quite well but... Imagine you are thinking on how to proceed with a complex accounting problem on your excel workbook and you happen to put your hand under your chin to think... The system won't recognize you and lock you out every 30 seconds. The timing can be increased but it's just not the best work application. Improvements needed.

    5/10

    Wireless USB

AMAZING. No more cable to plug in a screen when coming to work, no more cable at all for anything actually. It works great, no lag so far.

    9/10

    Wireless Charging Station

Nice feature... One less cable to plug!

    8/10

    Latitude On

Basically this feature is almost useless. It enables someone to turn on the PC with a custom made Dell operating system which enable you to do basic office work like typing and spreadsheets. It's supposed to increase battery life and be turned on in less than 5 seconds. The only problem is most working people like me need excel, the internet and often an accounting software to work. This is just not good for me.

    3/10

    Battery Life

Over 7 hours if just typing, excel work with Wifi disabled.

A little over 5 hours with the extended battery while watching a movie.

A little less than 5 hours while browsing the internet and watching a streaming movie.

Ok, this bench is really just for fun as this PC is not made for that...

    Thanks for sharing this.

Can you crop the HD Tune result? Alt-Fn_Prnt Scrn will capture just the active Window and not the whole screen.

The HDTune result also looks low for a PB22-J. I have a 256MB PB22-J and the average read speed is about 150MB/s.

Finally, a review! Looking good so far. Can you also upload a CrystalDiskMark at 100 or 1000MB for a more complete SSD benchmark? Thanks! +1 :)

What type of work are you going to do with this machine? I am interested in real world performance with stuff like Netlfix, Coding etc.

I run an accounting software named peachtree, a website design tool named dreamweaver and photoshop.

They all run great and as fast as my old M170. This is a first impression and not supported by benchmark which I will post in the next 48 hours.
