    It is definitely not a thermal even/heat issue. So far, it has only shutdown when it is at idle. I have run several burn-in programs (prime95, furmark) without issue (the temps are never excessive). I have done everything that I can think of to try and reproduce the problem without success. I suspect that it is a driver issue related to Windows power management. Since the problem occurs so infrequently, it is virtually impossible to debug.

    I would swap them, but you have to tear it down to do so.

    I have a question about the webcam mic. I can't figure out how to get audio out of it. I recently bought a refurb with the webcam and array mic. I re-imaged with drivers from the dell website, but I didn't see listed anything for the webcam for windows 7 x64, or x32 for that matter. The webcam works fine, but there is no audio. The "microphone array" device is present in the sound settings, but no amount of adjusting levels or options for the device has any effect. I never see anything on the level meter and when I "listen" I don't get anything.

    Am I missing something easy?

    Does anyone have an idea before I call tech support?

    thanks

    I agree as well - its not thermal, so it could be driver related. I don't think its a short either since it would happen more often.

    Do you see anything in the logs to indicate the last application that was ran, or the last event before the hard down?

    I had problems with my webcam being very dark. They sent me a Webcam for Business cd that installed dell webcam central and it helped, but still seems a little darker than I would like.

    There was not special driver for the webcam, even after installing the webcam central software it was still using the standard MS webcam driver.

    Did not test the audio, but will try to soon.

    I would change the display panel on your own if I were you. ;)

    I wonder, who in their right mind would buy at this price? From what Dell make these prices up taken? :D

    I've seen some bonehead ordering at large companies. The guy in the carpeted office wants a loaded out laptop, tells the secretary, and BAM , a 9500.00 laptop is delivered.

    Heck, I've seen some of the same thing at small companies, like one I built some desktop PCs for last year, and two of them are still sitting in the box unused. One of the high paid execs bought a new 3000.00 Sony laptop because his old one was acting up. I had to remind him the "old" one was still in warranty..

    @DallasGeezer

    Did you get an email confirmation once you put in your exchange request? So far I have nothing. I have the Service Request number but the email I was given bounces back. I may have the wrong email as I had a bit of trouble understanding her at times.
