^^From my understanding, the AU panels are only available at one point and it is for the 1600x900 resolution. Dell wants to go the cheapest route for cutting costs so therefore we end up with this cheap crap. They'd rather route their costs towards logistics which makes very little sense and most problems are left unsolved -- except other than to keep FedEx busy.

No, for the M6600, the 1080 screen is made by AU and LG. I don't know who is making the IPS screen. Chi Mei is supposed to be no longer used since October.

How Chi Mei was ever used is beyond me.

Maybe for the M6600 line. I received my XPS 17 on Dec. 7 with the ChiMei screen and it was freshly configured on the 27th of November. Well, guess what...nothing but downhill from thereon. Just today Dell Early Life support put in an order for a new replacement system and assured me that the new ones are not supposed to include the CMO screens and they thought the one I had must of been put together with leftover parts....maybe, because I did get the XPS 17 at a bargain price of $775.

Frankly, I don't see this conflict definitely eliminating Optimus from using with the IPS screen - after all, the same panel could display 8 bit color when the application runs on Intel, and 10 bit - when it runs on the nVidia?

You might get a better deal by buying from the outlet yourself. I have seen some incredible deals, and some not so incredible. It's possible you might get a Chi Mei panel in a refurb, and you don't want that. They had a 25% off last week for two days. 99% of the ebay sellers get theirs from the outlet.

It can be very hard to snag one during the sale days. The dealers use the autobot programs to add to their cart in the Dell outlet .

I'm starting to wonder about dell's quality control in the refurb dept. Of the four M6600 we have received, the two that were "previously ordered new", which should be the best of the outlet laptops, had major hardware problems right out of the box. One with the bad video card, and one with a bad touch screen.

I'll second the outlet recommendation. I got a VERY good price and there was no sale at the time. I basically paid less than 1/3 retail. It did take me a few days to beat the bots to a decent one. You may want to try calling.

As mentioned though, be prepared for potential problems. If they do crop up Dell will take care of you. I don't think ebay will increase your chances for a good one, and it will severely limit your options if you choose to return it.

Speaking of the outlet M6600. Is there a way to see how old a laptop is? The last one we received was a refurb, the Hardwareinfo program says the LG panel was made in 2010, CPUID says the ram was made in the 30th week of 2011. Of course, with the refurbs, they can contain used parts in them.

Usually Dell erases the history of the service tag, but we had one refurb where they forgot to do that, and it was 6 months old. So, a good chance it was a laptop that the owner tried to get fixed, and Dell just replaced it after 6 months. It might be helpful to know what problems the first owner had to see if you have the same problem

Thanks, I'll stick to the Outlet! How do I get notified of Outlet deals(25% off, etc.)?

Does Dell Outlet charge Sales Tax to CA residents? If so, I might be better-off purchasing from somebody in Delaware through eBay.

Yeah... they do charge tax... What's a Chi Mei panel?
