Unfortunately the newest BIOS (A14) on the XPS 17 doesn't seem to help.

The XPS17 I had didn't have that problem with it's LG screen. One possible difference is that I had 3D and therefore no optimus.

To be honest, I think this AUO panel is worlds better than that LG panel. The LG panel looks grainy to me.

I agree with you on the AU panel. The original one that was configured with my XPS came with the ChiMei screen and you should see the grain on that one. The LG looked much better if it wasn't for the flickering. I was gonna returned the laptop for a refund but tech support ordered a new replacement (yes they assured that it WILL be new and not a refurb) and we'll see what kind of screen it will come with. I don't have 3-D so most likely I'll get an el cheapo ChiMei, but I'm crossing my fingers for at least an updated LG. I guess the the other option would be to purchase an AU screen if it all comes down to it.

Are the techs replacing the LCD cable when you get the new panels?

Are you checking the display refresh rates after the install and adjusting it if needed?

When you updated the BIOS, the Optimus feature was most likely enabled as the default setting with the NVIDIA card installed. This is why you see the Intel GPU most of the time when checking. All you need to do is disable Optimus and the 4000M will show up all the time.

Yes all those were ironed out; the cables, refresh rates, turning off nVidia, check bios (I am suspecting A14 is the culprit here). As DallasGeezer had mentioned earlier from a few posts up, his LG panel flickering issue was corrected with the newest firmware. From my understanding the latest (A14) firmware on our XPS 702x are having issues with Optimus or video driver related. My system came configured with that version and I kind of felt tempted to downgrade to A12. My understanding is that it can mess things up with the rollback and Dell has since pulled A14 off its support page.

By the way, I replaced TWO panels, both LGs and they inhibit the same problem. This concludes that there is nothing wrong with the panels but the issue lie solely on Dell's parts. Anyway a new system is configured because every time I call Dell, they'd always go the extra mile so I am willing to give it one more try. Worst comes to worst, I'm just gonna buy an AU panel myself.

for me it finally looks, that Dell has got simply generally problems with controlling LED backlight - various people are experencing less or more flickering or unstable picture (please note, that in the M6600 even when picture seems to be stable, with lower brightness there are displayed some moving strips on the screen and they can be easy recorded even with cheap digital cameras).

It isn't probably connected with concrete units or refresh rates, but this is general design flaw (method and parameters used for controlling backlight LEDs).

Big shame, that it is visible in more expensive high end products (to compare - used by me another 4 years old laptop with 60Hz LCD doesn't have this issue).

Like I said earlier - isn't possible at least to add option for controlling PWM frequency in BIOS ?

PS. The same with ASF for M6600 - I still don't know, if it works or not. Big disappointment for me and big shame for Dell.
