Considering what I wrote about the very same application burning the very same brand of media from the same batch, no it isn't....

I want to take the 500 gb seagate hd from my m6300 and install it in my m6600 as a secondary hd for extra storage. The hd is less than a year old but it has a lot of files and the operating system from the m6300 on it. I want to wipe all the files off and start clean. Can I install it in the m6600 and just reformat it or should I try to erase all the files before installing it in the
m6600? What other options do I have?

I also may want to backup some of the files from the primary drive to it. Should I partition the drive if I want to use part of it as a backup for the primary drive?

Hey dude, I'm just trying to help..The way one burner handles a particular media can be different than the way another burner handles it, leaving you with a slight variation in the end product. I've read enough DVD burner reviews to know that some burners don't work well with some media.

In fact, I have had a movie burned on my older desktop PC that would play fine on the PC ,but would skip and pause when playing on the DVD player. I changed the media , burned again, and it played fine on both. It wasn't cheap media either.

Actually it can. Even though you are using the same media you are using it in two different burners. DVD burners can be very picky when it comes to media, some producing better results than others. It could be that the burner in your second PC agrees with that particular media, or that it isn't as picky. Unfortunately the only way to really test your drive is to try multiple brands of media and test the resulting discs in the desired playback device.

You may get lucky and find some reviews on your particular drive, but those are usually targeted at desktop users.

Since we're on the topic, what brand DVD-RW are you using? At what speed are you burning the disc?

Edit: DallasGeezer beat me to it :)

Hi guys, I appreciate you're trying to help. And I realize a medium/burner combination may pose a real lottery. However, in this case, odds are my M6600 burner is very picky indeed:

    - I tried Sony, TDK, Verbatim and no-name media, burning them at the lowest possible speed. They all play back well in this particular burner, but none will play in my set-top player

    - any of the above media play well in all 3 players when I burn the same material with the same application, but using my other PC's burner!

So all I need is just establish whether my laptop's burner is or is not faulty :)

May be that the laptop drive's burn quality simply doesn't agree with your set-top player... replacing the drive in the laptop may not fix it (unless you happen to get a different model). A lot of set-top players have a low-quality drive and thus may be more picky than drives in computers are (in my experience anyway). Do you have any other set-top players to test with?

You can wipe it after you install it. You shouldn't have any issues with boot sequence, but if you do make sure the correct drive is selected in the BIOS.

Partitioning is a matter of preference. You could always create a directory to hold the backed up files. The only time I personally create a separate partition is when I think I may want to format them independently in the future.

Does anyone know why we can't use Intel integrated graphics with the IPS panel? (it won¡t let you install the Intel graphics driver) Could that change later on with newer drivers or is it a hardware limitation?

Its hardware limited since Intel's integrated graphic card doesn't support 10bit colors output which the monitor requires. It could have been possible to output 8bit when the Intel card works instead of the Quadro (optimus) and then back to 10bit when Quadro kicks in but the screen would flicker every time when switching between 8bit and 10bit color output. Therefor, dell decided to turn off optimus so that only Quadro would work and output constantly 10bit to the IPS screen.
