I have used and tested the:
    XPS 1645
    Studio 1747
    XPS15 L501x
    XPS15 L502x
    XPS17 L701x
    XPS17 L702x

    Latitude E6410
    Latitude E6420
    Latitude E6520

    Precision M6600 with the m8900, 3000m, and 4000m powered by the i7 2720QM and 2820QM.

Out of these, the best 15.6" notebook for me was the E6520 and the M6600 with the 4000m and 2820QM is the best 17.3".

    Hope this helps.

    Scott-

PS: The louder fan noise with the L701/2x killed it for me.

This is the more nuanced question I guess - the best ENTERTAINMENT notebook? I know that in terms of build quality, solidity in use, stability / noise under load, etc the Precision will certainly beat out the XPS. The question is whether the Precision works better in the setting I put in my thread. I'm not entirely convinced at this point.

Go for the i7-2860QM (Q4-2011), it's better performance than the i7-2920XM. The 2820QM & 2920XM is the older version launched Q1-2011.

The M6600 with IPS panel covers the NTSC color gamut. NTSC is wider than AdobeRGB and much wider than sRGB. I think the home theater world would call the the IPS panel a deep color display. It is a seriously good display.

Speakers on the M6600 are optimized for video conferencing. They are good for meetings and small presentations. Some other laptops have 1" subs and marketing deals with audio companies. They may sound better, but I have never heard a laptop that sounded better than good headphones or dedicated speakers.

Will ask one of my coworkers to borrow their MBP17 tomorrow to compare the speakers. Honestly can't remember how they sound. The Display on the MBP17 is roughly the same quality and brightness as the 17.3" FHD sRGB display on the M6600.

If you do go XPS make sure you do NOT get the 3D version. It does not have optimus and the fan runs all the friggin time. It also sounds like a hair dryer. I returned mine and bought this M6600 and I couldn't be happier.

The sound was ok on the XPS17, but Bokeh stated it doesn't trump dedicated speakers or headphones. Sound is absolutely the only thing the XPS17 might have over the M6600. One thing I really didn't like (there were many) was that the speakers are on the palm rest. When typing or using the laptop in general my left hand completely blocked the speaker.

The speakers on the M6600 are quite weak, as you said really only useful for something like videoconferencing, where the point is that you can hear the main content of what you're doing. Videos, music, etc. are not particularly enjoyable, though they do "work". Almost no bass to speak of. I use a 2.1 set by Altec Lansing, it's small enough that I can just set it up on a desk or wherever I use my M6600. Otherwise, agree, headphones.

I agree, that M6600 provides correct, but not incredible sound effects. For me it's interesting one thing - why it isn't possible to join all technologies known from years and make one excellent line for pros ? With good displays (the best 120 Hz, full matt, without blinking, etc.), good sound (subwoofer, etc.), etc.

When we speak about sound - Sound Blaster Live was available somewhere in 1998, now we have 2012 and we can't get "from the box" even such features like in 1998 (I mean - nice environment settings and effects, etc. etc.)

I have feeling, that many people would be interested in buying something like that and it won't drop sales...

Now it was mentioned in the other thread that the choice of the IPS panel disables choice of Optimus. Can ppl confirm / disprove that?
