It takes a week or two to build from ordering. Pretty fast actually. Takes like two-three days to ship if you get one from Outlet.

I totally agree with you. Truthfully my Asus g73 kills my Dell Precision 6600 in sound quality and I prefer their 1920x1080 screen (to the 1920x1080 Precision screen). But it doesn't make since because Dell has had some great products in the past. They should be constantly on top in every category. Heck, in 2004 I brought my first really good laptop. It was a HP Pavilion zd8000. The speakers were Harmon/Kardon and they had 8 times more bass than these. It really doesn't make sense to pursposely put sorry a** speakers in a high end laptop. I refuse to believe that no one at Dell has ears. As a musician I take sound seriously.

FYI. I haven't seen these in a thread, but I wasn't sure if anyone else had discovered that it's perfectly possible to upgrade your Dell Precision with 1TB drives. I just did. I know the specs list says 750gb max, but I put a Samsung Spinpoint 1TB 9.5mm drive in my m6600 and it works great. I got a good deal on it too (only $129.99 from MicroCenter).

Size does matter in Home entertainment. Max you can go is up to 1080p (that's most of the movies format for consumer) Unless you are going for post production and pre-production where the resolution is much higher than that.

m6600 with external display e.g. Dell Ultrasharp U3011, it can display max resolution at 2560x1600.

If you don't need the extra, why pay extra for a machine which you won't fully utilize, where all it will be out of date in 2-3 years time.

This machine would costs alot. Speaking from the 3D modeling and rendering perspective in the design/testing of complex circuits. Back in the mid 90's engineers/designers will use 2 workstations (desktops) that is either a Sun, HP or IBM. Combined with the quad 29" Monitor (with extended desktop) with super high-resolution and very dense pixels, the whole set will cost easily over USD50,000 and only runs on custom Unix X-Windows.

Now it fits in your backpack and costs USD3,000 and runs on Windows. And adding all these into one laptop will make it too expensive. Bettter to get people to source it separately.

OK, I will describe it differently - few years ago it was possible to buy nice notebook with very cheap 4:3 LCD and it was excellent for office work. No blinking (CCFL), full real matt, etc. They gone. We have 16:10 and 16:9, it's more and more difficult to buy full matt, we have bigger resolutions, but many people see, that it's worse. See LED backlight issues for example. You pay the same or even bigger money and get slower refresh frequency (sometimes it's even visible with naked eye).

When we speak about sound - I don't think, that creating motherboard with good sound card is so expensive (you can use old PCI for example and connect one of available chips). The same I don't understand too, why card separately sold for let's say 150 USD has to increase more notebook price (for example 500 USD).

Of course, it's technical miracle, that you can get your office with you. But it doesn't change fact, that can't find currently notebook with good quality in all critical areas (picture, sound, loudness, etc.) even in premium class. I will say more - some new solutions are much WORSE for users.

Why ? I will name it - companies preffer to create 20 device lines (each with some possible lack) instead of few with everything (in other words - we don't have company working in x86 business like Apple).

Why ? Because some business strategies say, that it's good way for forcing users for exchanging devices more often.

This is the real reason (which is wrong from the nature).

I will repeat: I don't expect unknown things, I expect only such quality which I have already touched.

...and I think, that first company, which will deliver it, will increase profits a lot. I will remind one thing - Steve Jobs left Apple for few years and they started to create more and more device models (it made them almost bankrupt), his first action was cutting it and concentrating on few only. Look on Nokia now (the same story is visible now)

Yup. agree with you. It's the illusion that the industry creates to give consumers the impression that we have a choice. But infact we don't.

Take for example, food products sold at walmart or any hypermarket. They are all mostly made from the same stuffs. Where a box of processed corn flakes is cheaper than a bunch of fresh corns. Then again, why? It's from that one corn, the manufacturers can create 3 more by-products from that same commodity and charge us 5x more by selling it in different products.

Apple's case was different. They were way ahead of their time by at least 15 years. e.g. Apple Newton in late 1980s, Steve Jobs already have the idea of a smart gadget (smart phone now) where we use in our day-to-day tasks. Apple's mistake was the wrong timing and being too ahead of from everyone else. Unified product focus is good, then we have the problem of competitiveness to create an all rounder. No matter what Dell makes, Asus, MSI, or Acer will always make it cheaper. Where majority of the users are just basic apps users. This is where Dell will lose market share.

Dell have changed alot compared to 5 years ago. There are only 2 models for the Precision. Japanese products on the hand however are most confused lot. Where product models is followed by 5-10 more digits of alphanumerics.

People at Apple are the ones that think of Consistent features with for a simple product range. Every other manufacturers out there are running around like headless chickens.

If I remember correctly, Newton was Gil Amelio's project and Jobs cut it off because of it.

Apple is of course not excellent company (they make big mistakes too :D), but idea of creating few devices only is brilliant.

When we will use - one motherboard line, cooling system and all possible internals for 17 inch notebook, one for 15,6, one for 14 inch, etc. Without any coil noises, sold in different segments in different cases (different for pros, different for gamers, etc.), in some segments without additional modules "in the box" (but with ability of adding/connecting them). It will be such success like 1,9 TDI line in VW cars :D

Returning to reality - we will not see it probably soon, but Dell made a lot of HARD work to make it real in M6600.

I agree, that some things are not possible (for example speakers can't be easy replaced to something better), but some fixes are still very required and still can be done.

For example - we could see list of compatible screens (including FULL matt and maybe CCFL too), we could see some improvements in backlight area, etc.

    It's possible even today

Anyone successfully swap in an IPS panel yet?

I recently purchased base model unit, except with the 5010M, and now am upgrading components. I'm essentially looking for part numbers. Already have the panel itself. I know I need different LVDS cable (looks like 50 pin [maybe]), and sounds like I also need an interposer board, maybe a bracket, etc.. I will be trying Dell tomorrow, but confidence is always low for get getting someone that is both knowledgeable and willing to help.

    Any input is greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Darrell.

P.S. - Just joined this site recently so I'm labeled a newbie, but don't let this mislead. I've been building PCs since 1992. I've owned multiple Dell laptops since ~2000 upgrading every year. I now own a few L702X, as well as old M6500, M6300. sold my M90 a few years ago. I'm a big fan of these precision laptops and I very experienced with modding. thx
