Yes. Better when there is no lights shining on it. This machine is meant for office use. If outdoor, get the add-on filter.

Just got it installed. The earlier drivers have been crashing on me only when doing basic stuffs.

Will see how with this 295.73 driver.

    Afternoon chaps,

Well I'm now typing from my M6600 - damn its big :D lol I've been used to a little Sony Z11 13" for past 2 years so it just seems like someone has take a small desktop and strapped a TFT to the top ;)

First impressions are EXCELLENT. Build quality is a huge leap forward from any other Dell I have ever seen, its rock solid. The only possible worry is the screen being a little bouncy when open, but I'm sure its fine.

Stripped the whole thing down last night to add the RAM under the keyboard, changed both HDs for dual SSD, removed the optical drive for a third HD (spindle), etc. Its running really well :)

No problems so far and I've now finished installing all drivers, software and had a couple of hours of use out of it.

    So far so good!

%cue ominous organ music indicating trouble ahead....% ;)

ok - I bought this case:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000687SME/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details

however, although it is nice it has no real "rigidity" to it. There is minimal padding between the laptop, the case and the ground and I worry that when I put it down I might damage the laptop if it is too hard.

So - what cases do other people have for their M6600? I'm ideally looking for a toploader case (backpacks when wearing a suit are a non-starter as far as I'm concerned - sorry), don't mind if leather or fabric as long as it is good. Cost is irrelevent, I've just dropped about £3k on the laptop, it deserves an appropriate case.

    Cheers chaps

I have this one: Amazon.com: Toshiba 18-Inch Metropolitan Case for Laptop: Electronics

It's plenty big, decent number of pockets, padding seems pretty good to me. I chose it mostly because it seems like it will hold up well for a good number of years. (So far I've had it for about six months, I carry my machine in it every day and it still seems like new.) My last case, it was not quite big enough for a 17" notebook so there was some extra strain on the zippers and they started to be hard to open and close. I've also read complaints on reviews of some other larger cases of the shoulder strap becoming disconnected while carrying it (causing the case and laptop to be dropped to the ground if it catches you off-guard) so I made sure to get one that looks like it won't have that problem.

I installed the 295 release this morning. Two programs (AfterEffects CS5.5 and Mocha AE bundled with CS5.5) that were always encountering inconsistent start-ups with Optimus enabled (sometimes crash, sometime perfect, sometime no nvidia gpu recognition) has so far worked without a hitch.
I'll hold my breath though. This seemingly "dependable workstation" is always surprising me with some bleeping quirk or problem...sigh...it's still better than the alternative I guess.

ok - first problems ahoy :) I've done a clean install, installed all the Dell apps I could download, but still have some issues:

    1) I don't seem to be able to edit the Dell created power plans? I want to make some changes to them but it when I click admin elevation to allow the edits it says it can't:

    2) I can't adjust the brightness.... any ideas? I'm using the Fn+arrow keys to adjust and the onscreen icon comes up, but doesn't change anything. Its stuck on max brightness and its hurting my eyes... is there something else I need to install?

    Any ideas?

    Cheers

I don't think you can edit the dell power plans. They were causing me a world of problems so I don't install them and just customize the windows power plan.

I don't think any special software is need for the brightness control. I did have that same issue when using the HD3000 drivers for the integrated graphics from the intel website. Installing the dell HD3000 drivers the backlight adjustment works as expected.

I had this problem when I first got the M6600 and finally found I could only change it in the BIOS, can't remember why that is but may have something to do with premiercolour.
