    Hi there.

First of all - I'm new here, so please forgive me if this question I'm asking is not supposed to fit here in this section...

My question is about M6600 Display Panel.

    STORY:
    ---------------------------------------------------
I have bought an used M6600, and it seems to me that the display panel is quite ... lousy. The reproduction of colours, viewing angles, contrast... everything looks like low-budget notebook panel, instead of top quality, which I was expecting. When I compare it with my Sony Vaio VPCF11s1E... it looks even more lame. Of course i have tried calibrating, setting up values for RGB, etc. etc. - but no good effect. There's always some little color tint allover the screen, and the viewing angles are terrible :/

Onboard diagnostics (F5 before system load) crashes on the display section and gives an error:

I have tried the latest BIOS, and still the same sh*tuation ;).

So... I suspect, that this panel in my Dell is a replacement of an original display... or it is just a lousy model.

I have contacted Dell and asked them to give me a list of models of Full HD panels installed in M6600 (in Europe) and here it is:

    • 4259G --- LCD,17.3FHD,RGBLE,LVDS,AG,Z,LG --- LCD, 17.3FHD, RGBLE, LVDS, LG
    • 983RG --- LCD,17.3HDF+,WLED,LVDS,AG,Z,LG --- LCD, 17.3HDF+, WLED, LVDS, LG
    • H8D3K --- LCD,17.3FHD,WLED,LVDS,AG,Z,AUO --- LCD, 17.3FHD, WLED, LVDS, AUO, Full HD (1920x1080)
    • HC9GK --- LCD,17.3FHD,WLED,LVDS,AG,Z,CMO --- LCD, 17.3FHD, WLED, LVDS, CMO, Full HD (1920x1080)
    • K57WM --- ASSY,LCD,TSN,17.3,FHD,M6600 --- LCD Touchscreen assembly, includes LCD panel and Digitizer
    • M99C0 --- LCD,17.3HDF+,WLED,LVDS,AG,Z,AU --- LCD, 17.3HDF+, WLED, LVDS, AUO
    • MGNC7 --- LCD,17.3FHD,WLED,LVDS,AG,Z,LGD --- LCD, 17.3FHD, WLED, LVDS, LGD
    • VCV1F --- LCD,17.3FHD,WLED,LVDS,AG,Z,LG --- LCD, 17.3FHD, LED, LVDS, LG, Full HD (1920x1080)

    QUESTIONS:
    ---------------------------------------------------
    1. How to identify panel installed in my laptop (serial number, part number, or model... anything?) without dismounting the screen? (Just to KNOW is it one from the list)
    2. What are the differences between those panels listed above?
    3. Which one is the best for me (I'm a graphic designer - I want a matte screen with splendid color reproduction)
    3. OR... is it possible to replace my panel with some other panel - NOT listed above, but known for good graphic designer usability :) I mean - is it possible to replace the panel with another panel, not supported, or originally installed by Dell?

THANKS in advance for any help in this matter. I have spent many hours and $ trying to solve this, but I still need help. :(

You can identify the panel with a tool called hwinfo64.

Check the manufacturer of the panel. If you bought the machine used, you may have the Chi Mei display (I don't see it in your list above but some M6600s used to ship with it). Earlier in this very thread there were tons of people complaining about it; it has since been pulled from production, but obviously it can still be found in used machines. Anyway, if your machine is covered by warranty you should qualify for a free replacement, as Dell decided that the Chi Mei display doesn't live up to the M6600's premium panel guarantee.

People generally seem to like the AUO panel the best, though the LG is also quite good. Note that if you are considering replacing the panel with the touch panel or IPS panel, both of them require a slightly thicker enclosure and also the IPS panel requires some additional extra parts.

That said; I'd say go for the AUO panel if you can find one, or even better yet, the IPS panel if you are up for the tricky install (the IPS panel has the best color hands down).

THANKS for the HWiNFO - it's GREAT!!!

Here are specs of the panel:

So it's not the crappy one, you've mentioned... right? It SHOULD work good? But it's not :/

And there's some sad stuff in the report - all those "not supported" parts... Shouldn't those be "supported"? Is that mean something's wrong with my panel? Could You please check it by your own eyes and maybe tell me if there's something wrong with this report? Something not typical?

Unfortunately there's no guarantee on my M6600 :( But I can still replace the panel on my own. Please, clarify it for me: since we know which panel i have - does the replacement for IPS would be a hard journey? Or maybe not?

And thanks once again - I haven't expected to see such fast and accurate respond! Thanks!

I'm thinking about getting the E-Port Plus. Once it's docked, does it disable any of the USB/ESata/SDCard slot(s)?

The IPS screen is slightly thicker so the entire display enclosure would have to be replaced. There's also an interposer board that is connected between the motherboard and the display; and the connection to the motherboard doesn't use the same plug that your current display uses, I think it's right behind the main display connector. The list of parts you need is:

Note... I haven't tried this replacement, I just copy/pasted this list from earlier in the thread. Also, for a while, only NVIDIA cards were supported with the IPS screen. ATi cards are supported now, but if you have one, I'm not sure if the parts list is the same. Also, if you do have an NVIDIA card, installing the IPS panel will disable Optimus.

Yeah. This is what I meant. It's only a few grams more. Wouldn't make much of a difference. :D

The Samsung p830 or Intel 320/520 does look promising.

Just checked with Dell Malaysia. They don't carry any m6600 compatible sleeve cover. Except the messenger bags. :(

All of these are made in China. Thus much cheaper and closer to ship to south east asia, and yet not available. Even the dell m6600 now is made in the new Dell China factory, all models 2011 onwards are from China, except lower-ends like inspiron, vostros and some desktops.
