how much did you pay for this? That's pretty cool config!

By the way, anybody tried the RAID 5 function with 3 HDDs (not using mSATA but the optical drive SATA) ?

hello all, i need your help. I have had Precision M6500 with RGB display, i7 920xm, ati firepro with 1gb ram, 128 gb ssd till now and now i am getting Dell M6600.
I need help in choosing certain components or regarding their performance-

all components will be directly ordered from dell i.e. no third party components.

    1. how is performance of 128GB msata SSD with respect to standard 2.5 inch 128 GB SSD by dell as a boot drive.

    2. Is there any performance difference in between 8gb ram of 1333 mhz and 8gb ram of 160 mhz, the 8gb 1600mhzram takes all four slots, while 8gb 1333 can be ordered as two rams of 4gb each thus keeping 2 slots for future.

    3. regarding difference in performance between ati firepro 8900 vs nvidia quadro 4000m for Solidworks, photoshop, catia as well for FPS games like crysis etc. Also in this case price difference is too high as you know so if some one can tell me performance difference in percentage so as i can compare with respect to money difference.

4.Performance difference between i7 i7-2860QM & i7-2960XM , also need to know wheter extreme editions produces more heat, more battery consumption and does it causes any throttling or not? again the price difference is quite high in between these two how they fare price wise.

is RGB IPS display better then RGB display in M6500 and also how it fares in comparsion to Full HD touch screeen display.

i am sorry if these questions were answered before, i spent quite some time trying to find answers to all of these questions, but answers which i was able to find were not clear enough. Please feel free to direct me to a link if it has been already answered.

Quick reply will be appreciated as i need to order config by tomorrow.

Bit longer? How much longer? 3 months? end of year?

Do you have any confirmed info about M6700? Dell didn't yet announce new Precision model. We don't know also anything about new FirePro series...

We have only unofficial 'M6700' users' wishes thread on NBR forum.

UPDATE: We know little more from Yesterday Dell Precision M4700 and M6700 - Preliminary Info:

I suggest you pay half the price and get a refurbished.....save the money to upgrade sooner :)

RAMs are cheap nowadays....so just whack cheap and buy 3rd party and upgrade yourself.

mSATA and SATA shouldn't have much difference. That option is for people who doesn't have anymore HDD place to place the 3rd HDD one....mSATA is freaking expensive now!

But seems like nobody can answer my question yet. Can I replace the optical drive SATA connectivity as 3rd drive to run RAID 5? mSATA is not an option. I can get a 480GB SSD cheap but mSATA has no way to meet both the price and capacity at this point of time.....

    1.
128GB SSD mSATA has good performance. Might not be best-in-class SSD, as the mSATA port is limited to SATA-II, but still much much better than a standard HDD for typical use and leaves both HDD ports open for mass storage.

Not completely clear here. Faster RAM will perform faster. Pay attention to the CL rating as well, that has an impact on performance. Also note that using all four slots at 1600 MHz works fine.
(You really should consider buying the RAM aftermarket if you're not already, it's cheaper and you have more options.)

    3.
I'm not aware of any detailed non-gaming benchmarks that will allow you to get your percentage difference. However, AutoCAD and Photoshop make use of the CUDA cores so you will get a performance boost even with the Quadro 3000M. Most people seem to pick the 4000M if they're looking for a CUDA/gaming performance balance (yes it's a little pricey), or the ATi card if they're looking for the best "bang-for-the-buck" gaming performance. You've probably gleaned this from the thread already. If you don't do heavy work in a CUDA-enabled app, the ATi card is fine; otherwise, seriously consider the 4000M.
(Also note that the 4000M allows the use of Optimus which can almost double your battery life under a light load.)

    4.
Performance difference is not as high as the cost difference, I'm sure there are plenty of benchmarks out there. The "Extreme" CPU uses more power (10 watts I believe) and that will impact battery life and produce more heat if the system is under load. The cooling solution in the M6600 is very good so the CPU doesn't have to throttle itself much if any.
