I saw 1600x900 on the Australian site a while back too....a resolution lower than that is nuts for that size screen :)

Your best bet would be to call, Dell University focuses on consumer systems. At least, that's how my school has it set up for them (Schools can partner with dell to have specific configurations or models available-that's why sometimes you'll get a better deal through the traditional home or business store)

Dell is funny when crossing from the consumer side to the business side. My business has tried at times to order discount packages from the consumer site and they would not let us do it and place the purchase on our business account. When we order new systems we always do it by phone and ask about available discounts. The agents are usually eager to make a sale so they get authority for some discount. If you suggest a student discount, you'll probably get it. I would be curious to know how it works out.

Why all brands are omitting 1600x900 option on 15.6" screens?

Probably price. I agree, 1600x900 is perfect for 15.6" screens. 1366x768 on a 15.6" screen is just down right awful.

It's even more awful on a 16" laptop which I bought, yuck.

Which is why I prefer 16:10 aspect ratio on my monitors and laptops. It hits the widescreen sweet spot.
