!! - See my post later on in the thread. Much of the information that I posted below is incorrect. The Samsung LTN170CT08-D01 is in fact an 8 bit panel that is made to Dell's specs.

As long as that 08 stands for 8 bit all is good.

People have been talking about these panels for almost 2 years now. Some want the Samsung's vivid color and some want the LG's more understated color. The only problem is that there is no way to know which one you will get.

    8 bits = 16.7 million colors.
    6 bits = 262 thousand colors.

If I can not have an M6500 with an 8 bit panel, I will not have an M6500.

Right now I am working to get more information on the Samsung panel because the information that is out there could be out of date. What information I do have on the LTN170CT (note that there is no 08 at the end) shows it to be a 6 bit panel with 50% color gamut coverage. The 50% is based on CCFL backlighting. The gamut that can be claimed may change based on the type of backlighting. If the panel is indeed a 6 bit TN panel, then the number of colors it can produce will not change. It will be stuck with a 262K palette and that is not acceptable for my needs.

If you break something on your own, you need the completecare insurance to be covered. It's not so hard to change the LCD panel.

Moreover, a little up for my question :

I realize that complete care is there for all possibilities, but I would hope that accidental breakage would be accidental. I guess it would not be complete if it did not include "screwing around with the computer and broke something care".

Not to start another tangent in this long running thread, but remember that every time someone intentionally gets a machine or part replaced, either 1)the cost of future machines goes up or 2) the cost of complete care goes up or 3) a factory goes to a country where its cheaper to make things than in the US or Europe.

I am not trying to sound all high mighty and condescending, but complete care is taken advantage of all the time. You see it all over these forums. I chose to have people check my panel that work on these machines all day because they would be less likely to break something. They were just as curious to see what was in the M6500 too.

Fyi guys i just tried putting the latest kubuntu on it and was getting lots of corrupt xorg artifacts, it also didnt detect the wifi card and most worryingly the dmesg was full of error mesages about corruption in the bios.

also am i right in thinking the idle speed for a 720 should be about 933mhz, its fine if it is but i havent actually seen that yet.

Hey man, have you seen the real photo, dont use your m6500 to look at it. I took the photo and I know what the real colour is. Not only red, green and blue looks weird. I can upload some 3d rendering to compare with them.

And Also the my T60P was 4 years old, the light pipe of the screen become yellow, I will change the pipe if I have time. I think the IPS is still the best screen for the laptop.
