    Hi all,

I am planning to take a Laptop with below stated details.I would like to know if it is advisable to take M6500. Durability is a deal breaker for me.

Please note that I need a Laptop although a Desktop for lesser price.

    Also,kindly suggest any alternatives.

Excuse me if this is not supposed to be posted here.

    1) What is your budget?
    70,000 Rupees (~1500$) to 1,80,000 Rupees (~3700$)

I am using up my scholarship money. And I am from middle class family. I want the Laptop to last as long as without any MAJOR maintenance issues.

    2) What size notebook would you prefer?

    Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen
    Desktop Replacement; 17"+ screen

    3) Where will you buying this notebook? You can select the flag of your country as an indicator.
    India

    4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?

    No such restrictions

    5) Would you consider laptops that are refurbished/redistributed?
I plan to order it direct from the company... rather than throught redistributors.... I am not sure...

    6) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?

I am a student of Bachelors ( Computer Science and Mathematics)...
A cryptography enthusiast.(parallel Mutation Algorithms... learning them )
Usually run simulations for many particle interactions in Theoretical Physics... I compile Data which generally runs into (6GB).
    Then, create graphical interpretation.
Animate various physical systems(false color stellar interactions etc...)
Don't use professional CAD right now.
Will use it after an year or so.I want to game, not as a professional though.
    Movies (Yes).
Video creation is just limited to the above stated animation.
Code testing for the above related tasks.{Please note that most of the codes for data compiled is from the code that I set which itself takes a day or two to compile.I don't want the testing to be slow.

I am a student of 17.I am a adventurer rather than a dedicated professional.I see how far I can go on my own. This explains the wide-ranged and brief description.I experimenting with more than one of the above programs running above
: (Data creation on one side; corresponding Image manipulation)
Excuse me if this is childish...

    7) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?
Not very mobile... Not too static as well.

    8) Will you be playing games on your notebook? If so, please state which games or types of games?
Never played Crysis.Planning to play it.
Played: WarCraft, Need for Speed Shift, Counterstrike, Hitman series.HAWX

    9) How many hours of battery life do you need?
I will use AC for my heavy work. But when on the move would like 3 hrs or so for simple word processing and low order compilations.

    10) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?

    Not sure.
Looks do not matter unless it is absolutely horrible.

    11) What OS do you prefer? Windows (XP or Vista or Windows 7), Mac OS, Linux, etc.

    Windows 7 and Linux

I am ready to purchase extended warrenties upto 3+ years
Kindly take into account that I come from a middle-class background and would be highly disappointed and severely crippled if the laptop gives serious issues before 5 years or so.After that I would like this one to rest for the purpose of watching simple videos as its retirement rather discarding or selling it .Also, if possible, I may maintain my dads sales accounts for all this period (4year past + 4 year future) in Oracle.

    Thanks in advance.

Oh yes sorry, that's right, with Reader 2.0 there is no internet or live link - I was assuming it would extend to the full "Latitude ON" style functionality. Does this mean there isn't the low power processor at all, I thought that was the whole point? Presumably it will be extended later to give live access and internet the same way they launched Latitude ON, intending it to be a light client for business apps, otherwise it's pretty much a dead end and a redundant button.

Can anyone give (or point me to) an idiot's guide to optimising CPU on this laptop. I'm doing processor intensive numerical processing (Matlab) and it works fast enough compared with previous hardware, but not what I'd hoped for. When it should be working hardest I see CPU usage on task manager peaking at 25%. According to task manager, five execution cores are doing more than tickover sometimes individual cores exceed 50%, but the total is never over 25%. It's a similar story from Resource Manager (this is all under Windows 7 64 bit). It identifies 7 CPU cores of which 3 or more are "parked" and although one of the remainder may be working over 50%, the total CPU load is never over 25%. The CPU maximum frequency goes over 100% when I put a load on, perhaps up to 120%. It's obscure in Matlab as to which code is multithreaded and which isn't, but even if what I'm doing is single threaded, why is my CPU load limited to 25% (I thought the i7 handled this itself) and is there anything I can do about it? I'm using the 720 processor BTW (yes, I know, but it saved me £800) but it should still be able to give me 100% shouldn't it?

Much of how the processor is used is coded into the software you use. If there is true muti-core support written into the software the application should be able to manage it best. You need to find out if it supports multi-core beyond dual processors. You could also go into task manager and assign processor affinity to the executable running and see if that effects performance.

The M6500 is big, if you are always mobile I would recommend the upcoming M4500 which is 15" model which will have the features you are looking for without the inflated price tag. 1GB Quadro Card, i5 and i7 Processor choices.
for most people the i5 and i7 non quad core will be more than enough as you will get higher clock speeds for single threaded applications.

You could also get away with the E6510 when it comes out if you are looking for a $1500 laptop.

Windows 7 is more than fine and will work with any legacy XP applications using XPM.
This pretty much confirms its not like the Z600. There is no mobile processor in this machine so it basically just a waste. Or a marketing scam. You cant even find any info on Precision On either.

I have to ask this but with most of all the control you have in windows7 over most of these functions why even bother with the Dell software packs?
