No. Although it was still in production weeks after BIOS A02 was out, it came with the A00 version. :D

The popping noise you hear during boot and in bios is sound card initialization.

When in windows my guess is with the bad drivers the card goes into some kind of sleep state or disables when not in use and randomly re-initializes and pops when it comes back to life.

I'm not sure what settings mannyA was referring to. The only change I would recommend is AHCI if you are using a SSD as a non-raid member.

    Hi YBcold,

I was referring to these BIOS settings see attachment, there is a link in this thread to dells website for this.

And have you read this Tutorial: How to switch from IRRT to AHCI Mode - E6400/E6500
This Pertains to the M6500 as well.

I made changes to the pdf; the default ones that I haven’t changed look good to me. What do you think?

YBcold, I am trying to get these settings strait in my head before my M6500 arrives as well. I think if we all put our heads together we all will have a stout setup, but I do think this should be done before we do a clean install. Like update the BIOS, drivers, and then do a clean install, and I just want to do this once.

    What do you think?

Ok, so now I'm confused. The attachment had all the BIOS settings, what specific settings do you recommend changing?

I was unable to switch from IRRT to AHCI mode regardless of whether I tried the MS kb fix or pre-installing drivers. (I installed the OS from scratch but didn't realize I should do this before the install, duh, live and learn).

This method sounds good but the M6500 does not have the GM45 chipset but the PM55 (?I think?)... so I'm not sure I would try this just yet...

    Cannonball_CO,

Do you still have your old drive, if yes put it back in then make your changes.

This should work on must of dell systems.

Nope, no old drive... I have only the Dell-supplied drive, my M6500 is a work machine and I don't have the personal coin to replace parts like that :D I did the OS reinstall because I got it shipped with an XPx64 downgrade... which in hindsight was totally pointless.

I don't really need AHCI until I get a SSD (at which point I would do a complete reinstall), so I've mostly let it go. I may try some other things, but it's not that important... I've mostly tried 'cause messing with computers is a hobby of mine (as I expect it is with everyone else here).

Speaking of... I think I'll go try right now. I'm surfing on the old i9300, she's a good girl for light tasks now.
