Basically, I like the orange. So no.

I'm sure others will comment on the technical merits but I can comment on the screen: As I've written elsewhere it is on the absolute razor edge of borderline usable for me - defo worse than the glossy, non-glass-fronted displays such as the VAIO's, Macbook Air, etc. However it is sort of frosted on the back which makes it more tolerable than some other glass-fronted displays (e.g. Macbook Pro glossy) which resemble make-up mirrors. What you get is sort of a matte reflection.

The difference between this and many other glass-fronted displays is probably smaller than the difference between this and a plastic glossy display. Ultimately you have to see it and figure out whether it works for you yourself. Personally, I'm hooking them up to matte monitors at any possible chance.

I'm hemming and hawing between the M6500 and the 8740w. Has anyone been able to look at the WLED and RGB LED screens to compare them? By the spec sheets it looks like they both have the same brightness and contrast ratios (and both are significantly better than HP's). I don't really care about the gamut, largely going to use it for doing programming but I do care about the quality of the display since I'll be staring at it all day 9yes, using the laptop display itself, not an external display).

The newer video card on the HP side is attractive as is the slightly lighter weight but not in exchange for a lower quality screen.

I'm coming from an Asus G71G which is freakishly bright because it has a dual CFL display.

    dgrosu,

Regarding the display... the Samsung display I have is pretty bright, so even in the average lighting conditions I've encountered so far, if I turn up the brightness, that eliminates the glare. This also is true for smudges that earlier posts warned about.

Second, I think its a matter of if you prefer the glossy look vs. the flat look. I actually prefer the glossy display because they make the colors seem to pop. I am also a software developer, although I don't work with webcams anymore (so I am happy with the crap webcam we early adopters where stuck with). Given that, I can understand graphic and photo literati may not enjoy a glossy display for their work, but I love my Covet's display.

For comparison, I have a Macbook Pro 17 Unibody without the glossy display. The colors on the Macbook are not as rich.

Also, returning to those smudges. I really like using a damp cloth to swipe away smudges. Since the display is glass, you don't have to worry as much about scratching it like with the plastic LCDs.

I'm also curious if the SSD card will eventually be supported for 3 disks, or if this is an architectural limitation. If so, I hope they eventually create larger SSD cards because I think 64GB is too small. Heck I have a 128GB SSD and already have my drive nearly full after installing the Visual Studio 2010 RTM yesterday!

But before that... I want my USB 3.0 upgrade! I am eagerly awaiting for havoctex's update...

Figured out one thing I forgot - what level of digital vibrance on the nvidia video drivers would desaturate the Samsung to look like the LG. I guess I could have also tried it the other way, what amount of boost would make the LG as saturated as the Samsung.

My new m 6500 is supposed to be here next week. I may install a second hard drive. Does the empty second HD bay come with the HD cage (caddy) or do i have to order this separately?

I'm with you and my Covet should be arriving on Thursday! USB 3.0 and all! Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Not sure if anyone noticed but the Covet made a guest appearance in the last episode of 24 right around the end of the show. The computer nerd chick Cloie was using it. Nice one Del!

I though i saw it lol. i guess i wasn't the only one.

I reinstalled Win 7 on mine and lost the dell theme, which is cooler than the default win 7 theme. Can anyone upload their dell theme for the m6500?

    Hello,
Do you think is possible to replace
    17in Widescreen WXGA+ (1440x990)

    by
Dell Precision M6500 17" WUXGA RGB LED LCD DISPLAY
    without changing other parts ?

Im just thinking to buy ex-display m6500 with that low res screen and then.. replace it by full rgb one. That will save me ages of waiting for the dell delivery
