    Just read someone's new 1420 review -

    http://www.reviewpub.net/2007/07/inspiron-1420.html

brings to mind two questions for us vostro 1400 vostro folkes.

    1. Weight / Size is certainly shown in an unattractive light. How much bigger and heavier are the 1400's since they come with the 9-cell battery?

    2. Also, does anyone know if the Auto/Air/AC adapter under the "additional power options" tab is the Dell Slim 65W Auto/Air/AC Adapter that is offered on latitudes?

The 9-cell sticks out 20 millimeters in the back on the 1400 according to DELL's online support. I don't think it looks too ugly since the machine itself is black. Not sure but I think it sits flush on the 1500 but that machine is too big for me.

Great review! thanks for posting it!

So, basically it confirms that Inspirons too, use magnesium alloy and spill resistant keyboards.

Nice! I hope you post the pics when you get it! :)

Is it more worth it to get the 1.8ghz processor over the 8600 GT in the vostro 1500?

Processor upgrades from Dell, IMHO, are ripoffs. So don't get it. If you are going to game a lot I would get 8600gt, otherwise the 8400m gs is fine.

Edit: I should add, go for the Smart Value versus the cheapest available option. A Celeron M is horrible in comparison to an Intel Core 2 Duo, but the cheapest Intel Core 2 Duo is good enough.

The upgrade upcharge for the cpu's is crazy ... like almost 25-60% of the price of the base unit.

    They hope people will upgrade.

That was my exact prediction. Looking at the vostro and the inspiron is like looking at an SVU from two different peoples perspective. If a car salesman is trying to sell to a woman he/she will point out how many people it can carry, how safe it is, how high on the road you sit, and how 'in charge' you feel while driving. To a man he/she talks about towing capacity, the v8 engine, and the sweet tires that come stock.

Its the same thing with the inspiron/vostro, its the same computer (minus software and warranty), the website just caters the feature-list to its audience. (that marketing degree paid off :) )

there was a post last night that did a good cost analysis on the CPU's just spent 20 minutes nosing around for it, cant find it. Did anyone else see it? remember the thread title?

If you plan to keep your purchase around a while... I have always lived by the mantra- buy the most CPU and graphics you can on the day you buy. everything else is temporary... these two choices are permanent. And within a year will start to seem outdated to the software companies, who determine to a great extent how well your machine runs. They program to the fastest chips.

anyway- the cost breakdown showed the 7300 in the sweetspot on a per Ghz per dollar ratio.
