Nothing of high worth here, just a +1 on the AS5 upgrade. My M4400 with the 770 was hot and downclocked all the time. I was pretty convinced I had bought a lemon of a laptop and corp standards here only allow for upgrades every 2 years. I found myself using the D820 it was supposed to replace even.

In desperation, I removed the old goo and replaced it with a nice thin coat of AS5 last week and wow what a difference. HL2E2 and the HL2 Lost Coast "stress test" demo runs at full native res (1920x1200) at 60fps! no kidding!

Definitely do this if you can. Definitely get the good stuff (local computer store had a tube of AS5 for $15) and follow the instructions elsewhere in the forum. I used alcohol pads to thoroughly clean both the cpu/gpu and heat sink surfaces and was very careful to just apply the least amount of goo to cover the contact areas and spread it carefully.

This simple procedure only took like 30 minutes and radically improved my opinion of this machine.

I've had mine pop off the rails, just like you say...twice, but it pops back in...maybe that's a failsafe to keep from breaking something...I put my hand under it now, no more problems, but I think they're made that way, ,I HOPE for a reason :D :D

That's a good tip. Newegg has the stuff in both 3.5 gram and 12 gram units. Is 3.5 g enough?

Cool (no pun intended), I'd always thought it had to be heat, or those darned quadro drivers...I think the card needs to be flashed in GPU bios to it's brethren, i.e. 9600gt, and good drivers put on it. That's what the HP guys were doing in the past, right off, I've read....at least with the ATI equivalent. I think I'm going to do it and stress test it before and after, if I get up the nerve :D :D

I can't find that this was ever confirmed. Can someone here attest? Does the DisplayPort -> HDMI pass 5.1 audio?

baniels: yes, 3.5g is enough. My tube was 3g and I don't know when I'm going to finish it.

I'm running win7 beta if that matters; it shouldn't for the purposes of this discussion; driver from WU etc.

Boy, wear latex gloves :D That stuff gets all over everything...spreads like there's no tomorrow...don't put too much and let it bleed off the chip.

hey, just got time to check the dpc latencies.

with the dvd drive inserted into the bay i get continously spikes, though removing the drive clears the situation.

i'll ask the dell tech tommorow if he has a solution.

    cheers gordon

Yes. The HDMI port passes digital audio as well as digital video or else it would not be an HDMI port!!!!
It will pass the digital audio stream like it will the video signal. If the source audio stream is 5.1 then you will have 5.1 in the HDMI signal.

BTW; HDMI = High Definition Media Interface (notice it says "media" and not "video")

    Cheers
