Does anyone know whether I can hot pulg and un-plug eSATA drives. I realize that I would have to use the tray icon to "Safely Remove" them, but I wasn't sure whether hot-plugging was even supported or not, so I've been completely shutting my Covet down to plug and unplug.

Worst case scenario - it won't damage the bus or the drive, but you might lose a bit of data, or it might not recognise the drive being re-plugged in.

Under XP it all depends on if the SATA bus is seen as IDE or other. If IDE then you can unplug, but need a reboot to recognise a freshly plugged in drive.

Try it and let us know? (You won't lose any data if you don't copy anything to the drive)..

    Hello all,

I've got a question about upgrading the cpu..
Is the socket the same for all cpu options? I.e. could I buy a 2.5GHz dual core now, and upgrade to the 3.06Ghz extreme later? Or to a quadcore?

So basically does the M6400 have one motherboard with 1 cpu socket does anyone know??

    Many thanks,
    Simon

Yes, same socket on them all. Look at Intel specs for the various CPUs on offer..all take the same socket.

Great! Thanks for that.. The it's about $1000 Au to move from the 2.8GHz to the 3.06Ghz here in Sydney. I guessing in realworld use I wouldn't notice that. But then I can always upgrade later on when prices come down.

Hopefully Intel will have a 3.0Ghz Quad out by then! ;)

    Regards
    Simon

Don't know if you care, but upgrading the CPU'd break your warranty.

I can't take that chance unless I know it is safe. I have all 5 of the computers in the house Ghost backups stored on this 500GB eSata drive.
