Just wondering if anyone has used the webcam to record video? I tried to record with both WMV and AVI at maximum quality settings. When I played back the clips, there are a lot of noise (for example, colored dots) in the video. Are your recorded clips relatively noise free?

"Only a few percentence of the M6400 users having problems. Most satisfied users don't post.... so making a decision on the number of pages of two threads sound very weird and naive."

How do you know this? Are you in touch with all these M6400 users?
At least I've made my decision based on what I've SEEN, i.e. far less problems reported with the Hp compared with the Dell. Where are you getting your figures from?

    Regards,
    Simon

Well, you've read about less problems, because the M6400 is available since September, the new Elitebooks came out 2-3 month later, most people get their order just right now... wait some time and you'll read about more problems. I've read about a lot of built quality problems with the 8530w so I turned to Dell. After all it's a question of money, the M6400 is (in the same configuration) about 1500$ cheaper than the 8730w, + you can have 2 hdds + dvd, 4 SO-Dimms...

We use 7 M6400s in our company, none of them has issues so far.

"wait some time and you'll read about more problems"

Why? You're assuming again that the Hp will have the same number of problems as the dell. So far from all the people I've spoken to with the 8730w this simply isn't the case. I have no reason, and neither do you, so assume later down the track this will change.

"After all it's a question of money"

It sure is... And over here in Oz the 8730w for me with the same spec was around $1200 cheaper than than the Dell.
Again another example of assuming your case is the be all and end all.

I'm glad you've had a good experience of the dell, it's a great machine when it works, all I'm trying to say is it's understandable why others aren't willing to follow you down this path, and AT THIS MOMENT (which after all is all we can base our decisions on) the HP from my research is a more stable, less error prone machine. Unless you can show me some solid reasons why this isn't the case I'll sign off on this discussion.

    Regards,
    Simon

First people are raving about new systems and show how great it is. After awhile the satisfied users don't have a reason to post because the big points about the system is well known and who writes than in a forum... people who have problems...

...just read the first 20 pages of this tread and you'll find no posts about problems ;)

I'm very curious to read your posts about your 8730w :D

Ok, my intention wasn't to pull the HP/Dell war... I just said I was looking at the 8730w as an alternative, maybe...

I'm just pissed that Dell doesn't provide the RGB led screen option to european customer (unless you get the covet, which is way too expensive for me). I have been waitting for it since september but Dell decided to pumped up price for now and still doesn't provide that led screen !!!

Just give them a call! I ordered my M6400 in Europe late November and even got the silver E2E RGB LED screen! It's still not available in the online configurator, but by phone you can order both the E2E RGB and the antiglare RGB screen.

    If you get an M6400.
First thing you should do is the BIOS update.
Then run all hardware diagnostics (hold down Fn key and press power button).
    If all hardware diagnostics okay.
Then OS updates (or install new OS and then updates).

Latest BIOS is AO3. The important one was AO2.

Your machine most likely has AO1 which you can upgrade to AO3 directly.

    Systems: Dell Precision M6400 Series
    Version: A03
    Build Date: 1/23/2009

    Fixes / Enhancements:
    1. Fixed issue where system may hang in certain memory configurations.

The BIOS release has been validated on the following operating systems:
    1. Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 1
    2. Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3

[My M6400 came with AO1 and I had ALL the problems described in AO2 and AO3.]

One thing I have had to remind people who ask me about the quality of Dell, Dell repair tech here, is that I only see "sick" Dells. Asking me if I think Dell makes quality systems is like asking a doctor if there are a lot of sick people. That is all he/she sees day in and out. How does this apply to the board? The forums are a hospital. The simple fact is we are going to get people with issues here more then people coming to say how flawless their system is. Oh and for what its worth here in MN I think we've had 2 M6400's that have been repaired in the last few months. That is a pretty good ratio to to the Latitudes and XPS systems we get.
