totally forgot i'd posted this lol :)

i found the fix for this problem!

Turns out the vga driver wasn't completly uninstalling and cauing conflicts with the 190.56 driver!

installed DriverSweeper to nuke the standard vga drivers, then installed 190.56
boot time is normal now :)

Has anyone had any experiences with those slightly smaller DVD discs? I'm not sure what to do with them as I'm worried they'll get lost in the m6400's slot load drive!

They hold about 1.4GB, see picture. The media code on one brand is RITEKG04 and is a type that does show up on the list of media supported by the TS-D633A m6400 DVD-RW however. Incase any of you had the same drive and wanted a list of supported media, I have attached it to the post.

    Veni :)

I actually have the same behavior as you on my e6400. I am a bit disappointed in this - I know you can say that it is a bit low on the windows experience index, etc, but my D620 runs RTM as well with the nVidia graphics and it does not exhibit this behavior. I am hoping that it is something else, but I really have no idea what to check.

So, my replacement fingerprint reader cable arrived... and voila! it works again - no palm rest needed :D (BTW, the PN is G747F - seems to be slightly longer than the original part K121P, but it still works)

First, this is the M6400 thread. There is an E6400 thread.

Regarding your problem: the thing is that the Nvidia chip usually idles at a low clock to save power and dissipate less heat (that is normal behaviour and it is a good thing). When you open a window, you suddenly ask the laptop to process a very brief 3D effect. The video card is simply not that fast speeding up.

Try the following: play a game in windowed mode (Trackmania Nations for example) so that your video card is at full speed, and then open up some windows. You'll see that they open with no choppyness. Alternatively, you can set your PC to High Performance, I think that keeps the video card at full speed.

Don't worry, your GPU is working fine :)

The RTM is only available (legitimately) through TechNet and MSDN - well, Software Assurance too - general availability is 22 October. I actually paid for a TechNet subscription just to get Windows 7 early.

That's a joke, right? Only I can't figure out the punchline. Let's see, guy pays hundreds so he can get something he can download almost, or possibly exactly the same thing for free right now or can wait a couple of months and get the FSNC (for sale now candidate). I don't get it *.

Ya know that if you're running Vista you can strip a bunch of stuff out of it, install the Windows 7 parts you like (aero, those 'snap' windows, the task bar, start menu, etc.) and put them in XP even but in the Vista case you'll essentially end up with something very close to Windows 7.

If the answer is that you're filthy rich then sorry, real sorry, so could you buy me a subscription to TechNet, Pretty please? Or I have this land in Florida I can trade you. Ever own a bridge? Got one of them too I'd be willing to part with.

Instant gratification takes too damn long and I'm glad to see someone doing something about it.

And for anyone that's read this far, any idea why my Widows 7 32 bit ran fine so I installed the 64 bit version and for reasons I'm yet to determine the cause of, runs like molasses going uphill. Maybe slower since I've never even tried the molasses thing. Everything went fine with the install except it didn't find or install any drivers for the 3700FX card and I don't know what to do.

And since I might have someone with a clues attention, one more question. I have MS Net Framework 1.1 Hotfix, 2.0 SP2, 3.0 SP2, and 3.5 SP1 installed and I have this gut feeling that maybe something in them might be repetitious and I don't need it. Or do I? And please don't suggest TechNet, cause as you might have guessed I don't have it. I found this 64GB Samsung SLC SSD for the price of a subscription and it was no contest. I'd hate myself if TechNet was the answer.

And what did Barn do to get a free one? I'm really behind some curve here and could use all the help I can beg up.

*just joking so please don't take this personally or seriously. Except for the questions on the 64bit thing and all the MS Net Framework stuff.

Well, I could buy 2 copies of 7 Ultimate for ... how much? $440? just to upgrade? no thanks! Now TechNet is $349 (or less with a promo code) - which makes more sense?

So, yeah, it's cheaper and avoids the upgrade tap-dance at the same time. What about Office 2010? Heck, I'll just download that too when it comes out :D
