I use a Zalman 2000 pad more out of habit and comfort than any real need for lower temps. I also use 18kGUI which is a fan control program (free) for fan control for Dells only. It's an old program that hasn't been updated in a while and have been told by someone here that was using Vista 64 that it wouldn't work for them. But it works just fine with my XP 32bit. I've reduced a bit the normal temps that trigger the fans and except for a 10 degree lower GPU reading it's accurate according to my temp readings from SIW and Speedfan. The Zalman pad I use more for the comfortable and adjustable lift for the back of the computer. But without any of the above I've never had any temp. problem with my Covet.

Anyone know how to set the backlit keyboard to NEVER turn off? My wife's studio 17 keyboard stays lit all the time, but in my settings the only options are a timeout of seconds up to 5 minutes - no "do not time out" option.

    Thanks!

    Hi all,

Been thinking of buying the m6400 covet to use as a mobile music production studio. And the last thing i need to know is firewire chip manufacturer and model. Everything else that i needed to know i found in this thread...

IT would be much appreciated if anyone of You lucky owners out there could check the IEEE1394 model and make for me and post the info here. Dell support could not give me that answer.. haha, kinda funny don't You think? :)

    thanks in advance

They can't tell you because things like that can change at any point in the production cycle. So while what people currently have may be informative, it isn't a guarantee.

    True,

But still as You say an inidcation of if the m6400 in general has TI chipset or not is still informative. I might get lucky and spare some bucks on a SIIG TI expresscard.

What i'm actually hoping for that they're not using Ricoh or some other crap... if thats the case I'll buy the express card at the same time when I order the computer... just planning ahead to be efficient. Sort of... :)

This 18kfanGUI program recorded that my CPU was up to 40C and then when I made it turn the fans on maximum, it drops to between 32-35C with good ventilation. Is this about right? Feels pretty hot to me. It didnt pull up any information on the GPU though.

    Veni :)
