The camera now works with the latest update from dell and using the separate install on the disc that comes bundled that is just the camera software.

    Hi there,

Talking of the camera.. what's the quality like? Any chance someone could upload a video somewhere? I take it that it's good enough for webchats, etc?

    Regards,
    Simon

I've got the camera to work, but am still having no luck with the digital mic.

I tick digital mic in the sound options then start a game (Left 4 Dead for example) It doesn't acknowledge the vocal input, and the sound card displays Jack mic (not digital) as 'ticked'. Anyone have any ideas?

There does sound like there is a sound driver issue somewhere in there.
Re the other Qs, I have no idea. I've never had a PC with a webcam or mic.

Have you notified Dell about these sound issues? Anyone else having problems with sound or the webcam's mic?

I really want to get this laptop but not if there's issues with basic things like playing sound.

    Regards,
    Simon

I've had sound issues on DEll machines in the past - It'll be a driver issue which will be ultimately resolved. I am about to contact tech support. It should be noted that these issues may go away with a fresh install.

My brand new M6400 is running great under 64-bit Vista Ultimate. I pulled out the Dell installed 80GB drive and installed two 320GB WD Scorpio drives in a RAID-0 configuration. So far, so good. My only complaint at this point is that my bluetooth mouse (Microsoft Bluetooth Mouse 5000) won't reconnect after it times out due to inactivity. I'm guessing that this is a problem with the mouse, not the M6400. Can anyone recommend a good bluetooth mouse???

is it safe to pull out the power plug from the laptop while the power brick is on, or do i have to turn it off at the wall first?

Just pull the plug out of the hot socket. Most people won't even have the luxury of a switched outlet.
