    1. Did your M4400 actually ship with fingerprint reader? Mine came without it, and the device manager of the pre-installed W7pro x64 doesn't list it. (On the other hand, when I try to re-install, it turns up with a yellow ?-mark).

    3. I have the exact same thing, on boot before W7 kicks in, there is a brief view of that text and it looks like 8.0.0.something. And I have installed newer drivers (the 8.9.2.1002, A01), but the text is still the same. Strange...

EDIT: Yup. Just tested it, installed again the updated driver 8.9.2.1002, but on re-boot it still says 8.0.0.1039...

Feels like I'm spamming here, sorry...

I just got the idea that maybe I need to the installer as administrator, for it to take effect. So I did that, and to my surprise it did not behave as the earlier times I installed, now it only unpacked a bunch of *.cat, *.inf, *sys etc files, and nothing else executed. I must've installed the IMSM application (twice!) instead of the driver. How stupid...

Anyway, now I tried to follow what LPTP wrote... and in the Device Manager, under Storage Controllers (not IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers as LPTP wrote by mistake) if find the ICH9M SATA RAID Controller, and I when point the updater to the newly unpacked drivers folder, I am told that my driver is already up to date! And sure enough, the Properties dialog for the driver says 8.9.2.1001. Still... the boot-up screen says something else...

My fingerprint sensor came installed in the laptop. It is actually a Broadcom Swipe sensor. Someone on another forum told me not to activate TPM nodule and I was under the impression that you did. I'm going to retry without activating. The only thing that I really don't like is all of the crap ware that you have to install for the fingerprint sensor and all you will gain is ability to login to Windows. I doesn't work for websites or documents or anything else.

The "Intel Matrix Manager" message that you see is actually the (I belive this is worded right) is the Intel Matrix ROM Manager and it is part of the bios, which makes sense because this message appears way before Windows starts loading. My bios A18 and A19 had this in it and my bios always defaults to "IRRT" under SATA Operations. I bet if I change it to "AHCI" that it might not load. Question - Any advantages to having SATA Operations set to "IRRT - Intel Rapid Response Technology"?

What DVD+/-RW is the best for the M4400? I like Sony/NEC but they don't make one for Dell and trying to make it fit is a pain in the . Haven't anything good about Panasonic, some people like the TSST(Toshiba/Samsung) however I have 2 of them in different laptops and they are not built very well and others on this forum do not like the PLDS(Phillips/Liteon). Time to flip a coin.

Are most people happy with Windows 7 64-bit now? Is Dell providing drivers now? I can say that every since I installed the Touchpad drivers from Dell website it has acted very sporadic. I'm staying with Windows driver next time as well sticking with Windows wireless and not using Dell Application as my wireless has worked flawlessly without it and jumpy and fluctuating with Dell application. Hey, i can put ControlPoint on and have 3 applications to run wireless card. No thanks

Hmm that's weird, for me the ICH9M is listed under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers,
the only thing under storage controllers is my virtual DVD drive (for mounting iso's and such).

    Weird, yes...
Under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers I have only Ricoh SD/MMCHost controller.

Put. a new Hitachi 7200 rpm SATA hard drive in and install Windows 7 32-bit and it will not recognize it as a SATA drive. The bios (A19) is set to AHCIand the Intel ICH9 chipset is not recognized either by Windows 7. I'm positive it was the first time I installed Windows 7 it recognized the chipset without any problems. I suppose I will have to go to Intel's website.

The only difference was that the first time I installed Windows 7 then bios was set to IRRT, which loads the Intel Matrix Storage Raid ROM. If you change it back to AHCI, the Intel MSM Raid ROM is not loaded.

@LPTP - Do you have your SATA setting in bios set on "AHCI"?
@OppfinnarJocke - Do you have your SATA setting in bios set on "IRRT"?

Sorry for this late (over-due?) answer... Yes, I (currently) have IRRT set in bios.
