Reather916, thanks & glad you got the keyboard you wanted.
I like this Vostro, no sign of electrical shock so all is good.

I'm trying to decide between the elitebook 8440w and the vostro 3400. I'm trying out the 8440 right now and like it, but I am a tiny bit disappointed with the color of the screen and the viewing angles. It's good, but seems inferior to a macbook when comparing it side by side. The Vostro would cost a lot less and I don't need the extra graphics horsepower from the 8440w, and I'm not sure there's a huge difference between the 520m and the 620. I would be taking a step down in resolution from 1600x900 to 1366x768.

How does the 3400 screen compare to the Macbook Pro's and Latitude or Precisions? Any advice on how noticeable the lower resolution would be? I have good eyes, but I also am not a huge stickler for detail (for hundreds of $$ less) and would be doing more web browsing/movie watching than video editing or really specific photo editing.

One other sort of specific question: what is the touchpad like? I was concerned that the 8440 touchpad would be too small and uncomfortable because I found the Latitude e6400 very difficult to use. But even though the elitebook's touchpad actually is even smaller height wise, it turned out just fine because it has a much better feel to it and it responds far better. Does anyone have experience with both the latitude and this vostro?

PLEASE HELPME!! I AM VERY CONFUSE
    (my english is bad :D)

Ok i have now the little syster, the vostro 3300 (with core i5 M430 without nvida, only GMA), is nice buy i have a problem, is heating to much for me in the right palm rest and the touchpad.
i use linux but linux is not supporting vostro 3000 sensors so i installed again the windows7 for test. an i have this results:

i run the machine with powersave, processor runin at 1197Mhz only, in idle the machine temperatures are:

The CPU and the GMCH is normal (i think) but the PCH is 76C in idle mode with 5/10 minutes running, after an hour the PCH is superior to 80C and my HD sometimes to 50/52C

The fan is working fine, when the CPU is 55C up the fan start to work with 3500RPM.

I searched for PCH temperature on vostro 3000 series but i can't find anything.

    * I updated the bios to A02 is the last one

    * I run 32bit diagnostic and everything is ok

    * the office temperature is 22C

*I take the temperature with Everest Ultimate Edition 5.50.2123 beta (this beta have support for vostro 3000 series)

*The windows7 is a fresh installation with dell drivers only and anything more, you can see the processor is 2% load, is not virus or any think else.

IF SOMEBODY HAVE THE VOSTRO 3300 PLEASE SHARE WITH ME THE MACHINE TEMPERATURES, I WANT TO COMPARE WITH SOMEBODY, VOSTRO 3400 TO IS NOT THE SAME BUT SIMILAR.

I don't have a Vostro 3300 but try reading your temps in Windows 7 with CPUID/HWMonitor

I'm so keen having Vostro 3410 but cant get it in UK as it's available just in USA. Vostro 3310 is great and available in UK, but don't have a DisplayPort or HDMI. :( So I'm thinking to get Latitude E6410 instead.

You would think a wireless card would be included - not optional. I'm looking at the 3400 too - great value for an i3 processor with generous RAM and hardrive. I really wanted a backlit keyboard too. I just recently bought an HP G62-144DX (Biscotti) and it appears to have everything the Vostro 3400 does except for the VGA port, Bluetooth (optional in the Vostro 3400), and, most importantly for me, keyboard backlighting. I'll probably return it and order the Vostro 3400. I am also considering a Studio 15 though with these options just mentioned. The price is similar to the HP and to the Dell.

I've been looking at purchasing a studio 15 as an optino to the vostro 3400. They seem to be very similar, the studio 15 offering more options including a plummy purple box.

Wow, I think I just decided against the 3400, based on this recent comment regarding fan noise. I was THIS close\ I'm wondering if anyone here has considered the Studio 15 with optional bells and whistles (?) Would love to hear from someone who is.
