People have complained about this massive threads, but it is a good way to compile all the data in a single place.

Now, if someone could format it and organize it...

The GS45's ICH should support RAID.

I hate the all-in-one threads as well.

Thanks. That's good news. If someone else could confirm the details about that 8-cell, that would be nice. I'm not looking to order right away - I'd be looking for the teething issues to come out of the woodwork.

NBR needs a review of this, pronto! Would like confirmation on SSD type (because if it uses the slim SSD and not 2.5" form factor, upgrading would be pretty limited) and accurate weight w/ 8 cell.

Too bad memory is also integrated and not user upgradeable (and not even customizeable on Dell's site w/o getting the high end package).

Chances are slim, but I hope they will release a slice battery battery for the Z600 too for 16-24 hour computing.

Personally, the screen size is perfect for me, I hate small screens (b/c I'm like blind) and while I don't mind lugging my 7.5lbs laptop around, I also wouldn't mind if it were almost half the weight.

Hmmm, yes. For me it hinges on the 8-cell, and runtime.

Despite it's build quality I'm kind of nonplussed - well, that would be a bit strong, but not, if you see what I mean, experiencing a definitive upward progression with the T400s - the current new middleweight in my lineup - from the SZ's. And that's the reason the SZ's still occupy a fairly mainstream place in my everyday use, and why I've only bought one of the T400s's so far. In fact the SZ's have actually been quite a hard act to follow, having skirted around the (inferior build quality) Z's as well.

The specs of the Z600 are right-on in terms of a more meaningful step up (the CPU/GPU doesn't concern me as much for what I do on this class of machine) so this has me a lot more interested.

4.5lbs is at the upper end of what I'd be prepared to carry constantly, but that is presumably with the 4-cell. So I'd have to be aware of the real-life runtime (and not, please, an Apple Fanboi runtime of claimed + 1~3 hours or at the opposite end, some full-GPU-stress+full-screen-brightness test) and all-up weight of the 8. If it does less than 6 real-life hours with the 8, I'd have to pass.

I can make an educated guess for the weight - a 4-cell would probably be around 200~250g, with the 8-cell being around 450g~500g - so that would probably take it to ~2.2Kg's. It's not a terrible weight, especially with a roomy screen I don't have to squint at.

Latitude ON can give you the 16-24 hour computing time. 8 cell will give 6 hours plus of real use time.

    I'd love to see a Z400 instead!

They're slim drives. Here's some web-posted docs, but for some reason we did not post a tear down guide. I will ask about why that is, and get back to the thread. Hopefully, they will post it. I am looking at the internally-posted tear down, and it's not rocket science.
