Yeah, I can't believe this thread has already got so many hits. I am with Greg, I smell something with this thread. Wait, April 1st was LAST month! :p We don't mean to berate your findings DelLatFan but you have to understand the skepticism here. You just signed up and you reported this thing in your first post. That's why it's unbelievable. Don't take it personally.

The way Latitude nomenclature works, as already mentioned in this thread, is C, D, E etc. You can't just drop a Z into the mix especially when the product line is working. The switchover to the Exx10 series shouldn't be until the summer with the E6x00 getting the first update followed by the E4x00 series.

From time to time, Dell tests lab units and here is the key, they NEVER make it into production. How do I know? Well... ;)

No. The XT2 is the newest addition to the Latitude family. It won't see any refreshes until at least this fall or perhaps winter.

Okay guys, let me give you a little scoop. Yes, this is my first post as I have been waiting to see someone posting about this laptop. I have actually held it, booted it up, and talked with 4 dell reps about it. I work for a large company that is a dell house. We recently had a visit from our sales reps and they brought their Regional Sales Manager with them. After talking business, I asked them what was in the wood-works at Dell. As a favor to me, they showed me the new Latitude Z! Yes, that was the name of the laptop. I don't know why they are messing with the normal Latitude naming conventions, but they are. It's only about a half an inch thick! 16" widescreen that was 16:9 aspect. It was black in color, but had a thin layer of a rubber-like coating. Felt very expensive. Weight was not bad at all. The keyboard was sealed around the keys like the macbook pro. The audio on this thing was awesome! Sounded like it had a subwoofer since the bass was so loud. The Regional Manager said that this would be the "Macbook Pro Killer". He didn't give me enough time to really dig in and see what the specs were, and when I got my 'berry out to snap a pic, he quickly said, "Uh, can't let you do that!" This happened last week and the Regional Manager said that it was rolling out in 30 to 45 days. Any questions?

If this is true, could it be Dells offering of the new (ish) low voltage platform from Intel that is designed to allow for small, lightweight laptops for normal prices with slightly lower performance?

Well in my opinion, Dell has a business case with 2k$+ business laptops - since during the last couple years the price of regular Latitude models have fallen dramatically, leave an empty space.
There isn't much in terms of performance that might justify the higher tag, but design tweaks might do just fine, and from what we can see with the introduction of colored cases, adamo, studio/xps lines seem the way Dell's going.

I've been waiting for a 17" WUXGA Latitude a long time, maybe it will fall into the "Z" family.

First of all, I'm not the stupid troll. That quote came from the Dell Reps mouth. I know that PC's belong in a business environment and Macs belong in our Graphics Department and in dorm rooms. But I think he was talking about the design, not the functionality. I, like many others, have been waiting on a ultra thin latitude for a while. My E4300 still does not cut it for me.

I don't know about the low voltage deal. The battery stuck out of the back of the laptop about 1.5 inches. Much like the Adamo, but not as chunky looking. The laptops lines and corners remind you of a stealth fighter. I wish I had some pics to offer you guys, but I don't. Somebody said the laptop would sell for $1999. I can't see this happening unless they come out with different levels of this laptop. The Dell Rep didn't give me a price, but I would bet that it would not be less that $2500. But we'll see.
