Meanwhile (thanks to Aaron ) I have found that Bitlocker is disabled.

But "suppose" in the future something goes wrong. Can I re-install Win 8 from that DVD ? Because I din't see a recovery directory at disk D ?
In the past Windows always needed some key ???

    And some other issue...

I have also bought an external Samsung Blu Ray writer/reader.
The Coved couldn't read Blu Rays with the pre-installed Power DVD.

So, I installed the PowerDVD-suite that came with the Samsung device.
Also that soft failed to read my Blu Rays.....

BUT...I downloaded the TRIAL of Cyberlink Media Suite 12....( only 30 days trial ) .... and that worked fine !!!

Seems that Cyberlink is just after (my) money....:(

    With my Covet, I received 2 Dvd's:

    1) Windows 8 Recovery Media for Windows 8 Products 64 bit = I suppose to re-install Windows 8 ?

    2) Cyberlink Media Suite Essentials DVD/BD

    REMOTE MEDIA 1.7 - JAPAN

Is that 2nd DVD other soft than the pre-installed soft on my Covet ?

Memory arrived. Now we're sure the factory installed 4G memory is under my keyboard, correct?

Is this a good video for installing under-keyboard memory: SolidBox How To: Upgrade and Install Hard Drive and RAM in a Dell M6600, Part 3 - YouTube

It usually is, but it may not, remove the back panel (two screws is easy after all) and check. You'll know right away. For most people, it seems that it was the case, but for me, the stock RAM was under the back panel instead of under the keyboard.

If you installed PowrerDVD Media Suite, then you downloaded a lot of stuff you don't need if all you want to do is play blu-ray discs. The basic pre installed software should give you what you need to play commercial blu-ray disc. If you're having trouble then you most likely need to activate the software.

The paid version for playing blu-ray gives you a lot more features such as 7.1 surround sound, 3D, and the ability to play 4k (PowerDVD12 Ultra). If you don't want or need all that, just stick with the basic version.

To their credit, Cyberlinks offers the most advanced blu-ray software available. I have PowerDVD 12 Ultra. It also plays back just about any audio and video file you can imagine. Nevertheless, you should also keep in mind that some commercial discs are heavily copy protected, so there may always be some hick-ups along the way. Just consult the trouble shooter, or if necessary email technical, and the problems should be resolved in a day or two.

I guess I'm switching threads again.....I started out with an M6500 in March of 2010. After a couple of motherboard replacements, I was system replaced with an M6600. With the M6600, I had the LCD replaced, the battery and then it literally "burned out" with smoke coming out of the rear eSata port They replaced my system with an M6700 this time. Needless to say, I'm extending the warranty.

    So far, so good

EDIT: I'm still sold on Precisions. I've had very good luck over the years with Laptops, and I think everything caught up statistically with this one purchase, which has turned out to be 2 upgrades so I'm really not complaining right now :)

    Hi guys,

I was wondering wat is the booting time frol your DELL M6700 ???

Let's say from the power button to the appereance of the Windows 8-tiles. ( Withn no login screen )

Mine is 23 seconds. Is that slow / good / fast ?

I have no idea, since this is my first laptop with an SSD.

So, just run it in Windows 7 XP mode or use VMware player and install and run windows XP in it's virtual machine.

It's a total waste to run a modern computer in Windows XP just for some outdated application which would run great in a virtual machine. This is how everybody's running those nowadays.

Since I have fast boot enabled and passwords/fingerprints along the way for a cold boot I tried a restart, which bypasses those things. It's hard to judge the exact point at which it switched from shutting down to restarting but I'd say 20-21 seconds to see the tiles, running self installed Windows 8 from my mSATA drive. Of course I have software installed which runs at startup and might impact the the time to display the tiles, but I don't which will affect the pre-tile part of booting rather than the post-tile boot elements. These are the startup elements in addition to Windows itself....

All which makes your results general at best. In the case of measuring an SSD, that makes the numbers practically useless. A better approximation would be to first state the type of SSD (SATA 3 or SATA 6?) and as much about the programs that run at start-up.

My timer begins at the push of the start button and doesn't end until the machine becomes available. Any other time points of measurement are useless.

That's my analysis, I'd like to hear others. Incidentally, I consider a boot time under 30 sec. very good. And anything under 20 sec, excellent.
