Thanks for the link, hrana. I've read all posts in this thread, but somehow your post about the 1866 Mhz memory modules slipped my mind.

BTW, do you have any idea why HWiNFO and CPU-Z both report the memory as PC3-14200 instead of PC3-15000?

I have been meaning to ask the developers that question. The frequency is correct for a 1866Mhz module at around 933Mhz.

Has anyone purchased a 6700 off ebay? I am seeing some pretty good prices on ebay for this laptop - any reason not to buy this way ? (ie heard of any scams relative to this laptop?)

I am in a small third world country where there are no good deals to be had on Dell stuff - thanks to this thread i am really interested in this laptop and want 3 of them. Since i cant get a decent price on Dell here ebay seems a way to get hold of these at good pricing - any reason (apart from usual ebay (fleabay?) worries/issues) not to buy one of these laptops this way?

Totally sold on this laptop - now how to get one.........

    Thanks

really close to pulling the trigger on this system. I did notice that for the Covet you lose the option to have the Nvidia 3D bundle, & also the FIPS Compliant Fingerprint Reader.... Im still a little lost on the difference in the Internal swipe fingerprint reader and the FIPS one, BUT I am assuming that both of these are eliminated from the Covet options b/c of the Gorilla Glass covering???....That correct?

I love the Red look of the Covet myself, but was entertaining the idea of the 3D bundle over the IPS display personally... I dont do CAD or heavy design and I do watch movies, work in ubuntu some(currently set up to dual boot both win7 and Ubuntu), but love the durability of the Precision line over the Alienware gimick which is why I'm over here checking out the M6700, and just getting it with the 3740QM and K3000M likely... I assume the K3000M and either the IPS or the 3D displays will be just fine for videos...(no gaming here)...

Haven't seen anyone comment on the 3D and their impression of that, take it no one has jumped that yet?...

Lastely I believe I recalled reading in the preview thread that when they come out with the touch panel for this you could upgrade to it(buy the part number and install it yourself and it will work, correct? would this still be the case for the glass covered Covet model you think?

    Thanks in advance guys!

Oddly, we haven't heard anything about the 3D screen. I guess the IPS is more popular among the pro types that this machine is targeted at. I think it'd be worth looking at just for the increase in brightness (400 nits vs. 300 with the other screens), but losing Optimus is not worth it to me.

K3000M should be fine for videos; completely adequate if you don't do any GPU-heavy work (games/CAD/etc.).

Currently we have very little information on the touch panel, as far as what the build options will be with it included. I don't know if it will work behind the gorilla glass. If touch is very important to you, I'd say hold off until we have more info. Unfortunately we do not know when it will be arriving.

Im not 100% up to par on the whole "optimus" thing to be quite honest other than that it is supposed to be battery saving and involved with the GPU itself... Why would getting the 3D screen result in losing the optimus? to my knowledge since you'd still have the K3000M you would still have Optimus tech in the system...

Optimus allows for seamless switching between the integrated Intel GPU and the NVIDIA GPU. The Intel GPU is adequate for most tasks and uses much less power. When the extra GPU power is needed, the NVIDIA card kicks in to handle it.

If you get a Precision with the IPS screen, you can't use the Intel GPU because it can't drive a 10-bit display. So you're stuck with NVIDIA only (i.e. Optimus is disabled).

Now, since we don't have any hard info on the 3D screen because no one seems to have one, I'm not 100% positive that the 3D screen would also prevent you from using Optimus on the Precision. However, that's how it is with the XPS series so until I hear otherwise I'm going to assume that it is the same with Precision. It would be for a similar reason as the IPS display --- the Intel GPU can't drive a 3D display.

Oh so your in the party of saying that the IPS display and ones like it are not worth it in itself b/c you lose the ability to have optimus functionality since the intel cant drive them...

just wasn't expecting to see someone want the optimous function over the display after reading the preview thread...

Sure would be nice to get one of the Dell guys to chime in on this question though regarding the 3D display...

My personally guess is that it have the same implementation and panel as the alienware and XPS 3D screen.

It's a trade-off. I can definitely see the appeal of the IPS display. I'm not a graphics guy but if I was that would probably be the display that I would choose. However, for me, the decreased power use / increased battery life is more useful. As it is, the "standard" 1080p display in the M6700 is the best laptop display that I have ever had so I am satisfied with it.
