Clogging the speaker holes might be an improvement! :D

How widespread is this problem? Are people seeing this right away or does it take a few months to develop?

usually a few months as the heat from the heatsink breaks down the paint.

Is this to be expected on all E6400's, or is it a luck-of-the-draw-quality situation?

we have a year and a half old M2400 (should run hotter than a 6400) that hasn't had any issues yet. I think it's just bad luck.

No issue here. My laptop a little over a year old. I think it's just a bad batch you guys had. :/

For me, almost 17 months with a lot of travel and no sign of peeling paint.

I suspect there was a sub-standard paint job on a batch of parts although I can't rule out heat as being the cause - my undervolted P8600 + Intel graphics don't generate a lot of heat.

No heat breaking down paint here, no peeling paint after 13 months. Seems like a batch issue worth pestering Dell for new grills, especially after only a few months..

You can try to type in a full, nice, reasonable, polite, formal, calm, e-mail to Micheal Dell, founder of Dell. His e-mail can be found here: http://consumerist.com/2008/11/email-michael-dell.html

Well in reality, it doesn't go to him directly... but close. They might be able to do an exception in their policy and get your laptop fixed up.
Ensure that you include your laptop model, Service tag, and full contact information, including e-mail (yes, even though it's on the e-mail, it's best to mentioning it again, at the bottom of the letter, in the case it's printed out), and phone number so that they can reach you easily.

A nice letter consist of a letter with quiet a bit of content. If you send "speaker grid paint sucks on E6400, make me new one in 24K gold", it will get ignored. Talk about all the detail, include pictures, say what tech support told you, and how it is inconvenient, such as you have a several big meetings with different people and people can see the paint removed, and that you feel uncomfortable with this, and how you are disappointed and so on. Don't blame or insult on anyone. These kind of manufacture problem can happen, it's just bad luck.

    Good Luck :)
