well that would stink. I wonder if I could buy a spare dell e5400 DVD drive and rip out the parts and stick in a hard drive?

Check the Dell website for the E5400 manual and see what accessories you can get. I would think modular bay would work similarly as the E5400 has a similar chassis.

just did a bunch of searching - the optical drives are different part numbers and they appear physically different. Since the E6400 is supposedly 1/2" thinner than the e5400 it makes sense that they're different drives.

I think it is quite common for HDDs not to power down, because the OS usually accesses one tiny file or whatever every now and then. Have you disabled scheduled defragmentation, file indexing and that sort of things?

Use hdparm-for-windows to set individual drive standby:

    # Identify the drive you wish to operate on:

    hdparm -i /dev/sda
    hdparm -i /dev/sdb

    # Set a batch file to run in startup with standby time of your choice, example 1 min. Refer to the -S parameter in the hdparm commandline options.

    hdparm -y -S 12 /dev/sdb &REM set standby timeout=1min, standby the drive now
