For users with the Intel X25-M; a new firmware is out that fixes the potential fragmentation problems.

I actually reverted back to A09 because I find A12 slows down the processor. If you run the Intel Processor Utility ID, you'll find that the speed of your processor isn't running in its full capacity and the system bus speed slows down too.

is there anyway to get rid of the CPU whine on this laptop? I know its on all C2D computers, and its not horrible but still annoying. It turns off when i open the sound recorder.

I'd do it through RMclock but apparently this processor isnt supported or something.

OK Well I have started using Cisco IP Communicator and noticed whenever I make or recieve a call I get a small icon in the taskbar labeled "Close Speaker Phone Companion".

So after a bit of Googling it seems this is part of some form of microphone enhancement and should be able to turn it off using the sound cards control panel, al la:

    http://www.vrbones.com/2008/02/close-speaker-phone-companion-in-system.html

But in my Control Panel all I have is the "IDT Audio Control Panel" and there is nothing really that affects microphone settings. So I took a look in the "Andrea Noise Cencellation (IDT)" in the Control Panel and you can select one of two options:

    1. Disable Audio Enhancements
    2. Acoustic Echo Cancellation (EchoStop)

Mine was set to the second, so set it to Disable and hey presto, the litle icon has not returned. Just thought I'd let you all know :D

    Cheers,
    Cy

This is the curse of Intel... because Intel test level engineers are super old, and lost there hearing. All mobile laptop form Intel when idle, makes this sounds... old generation where louder than now.

A trick is to play music (as it uses the CPU) or turn on the bluetooth card if you have one. Or run the laptop on battery. I usually listen to internet radio, so that solves the problem. Any application that uses teh CPU contently at ultra low level will make it shut up.

I discovered the solution to this shortly after I got my first system with a Core Duo processor- Xanax! It's not nearly as irritating when I'm well-medicated. :spinny:

I just ordered an E6400 from the outlet with an intel 5100 wifi. If I order a intel 5300 mini half card from ebay.. would I be able to install it easily? Will the E6400 already have enough antennas for it?

The swap will take less than five minutes. The E6400 is pre-wired for all possible upgrade cards (Bluetooth, UWB, WWAN, Intel 5100/5300)...mine has the wires already routed to the spot where the card would be added or upgraded....so it's very easy. Adding Bluetooth (if yours doesn't have it) is just as easy.

allfiredup thanks for the info. I now have the confidence to upgrade my intel 5100 half height mini-pcie card to an intel 5350 wifi + wimax mini-pcie card.. I guess it will have to go into the wwan slot cause it's not half-height? also will the antenna cables reach the wwan slot? the 5350 I ordered comes with 3... also do you know if the wwan slot has a usb power cable? I think the wimax gets power from a usb cable

Does Dell even support the 5350? I would be somewhat concerned that even if the Intel drivers work, you may lose some functionality like the wireless switch, the wifi LED, and so on.
