It's tray loading DVD because the whole thing is easily removed and can be replaced with another hard drive or extended battery.

Given everest15's reference to pounds I'm assuming he's in the UK - and all the M6600 online details in the UK note a slot-loading drive (which is provided by default on all the public evalue codes, at least that I ever saw): Dell Precision M6600 Mobile Workstation | Dell UK "8X DVD+/-RW Drive Slot Load".

A tray DVDRW is, however, available when it's quoted though by a Dell rep.

Pretty certain the optical bay HD caddy will work with either option, though you might need to source a plastic part :)

hurmmm... Mine also Slot Load DVD+/-RW drive type and now take it out replace with 7.2mm Caddy to add another HDD in it... bought about RM70 including delivery (in Malaysia) looks bit plastic not as in the "www.newmodeus.com".. so far have total of 2 SSD + 1 HDD on-board.. It's plenty of storage to think of as boot drive move to mSATA.. :D Yet do read that some other user received their M6600 with tray type instead they expecting the slot  ... my previous E6500 also using the Caddy but 9.5mm type to ensure it's look nice

Anybody try putting an Ivy Bridge CPU in an M6600 yet? Thinking about upgrading to i7-3920XM but not sure if there's BIOS support yet. Got a call into Dell but not sure how accurate/authoritative their response will be.

Here's a comparison on Sandy Bridge vs. Ivy Bridge:

Thanks for the info Tickedon. It would seem that I landed up with the tray-loading drive as a result of the online dell rep who setup up the custom build order for me. Pity he had to go and choose the tray-loading. It's tacky as hell and will soon break I suspect (((

Anyone know if a slot-loading drive can be bought separately? and what it would cost (preferably in Europe).

Thought I'd pass on info about 2x Sodimms ram in case anyone out there is wondering if it's faster to have 2 dimms in 2 banks or just a single dimm like I had... a few pages back one guy said that 2x dimms in dual-channel mode would give almost no performance increase over a single dimm. It seems he was totally wrong. My Windows7 memory performance index with 1x Samsung 1333mhz sodimm had score of 5.5. and now I have it populated with 2x Samsung 1333mhz and the score is 7.6!
