I agree, its not good to compare. However its hard not to compare since the laptops in question are for business related consumers. We know they will be better than the consumer level, but in what way we ask. For example, will the aluminum outside casing in the vostro be better than the magnesium alloy roll cage in the latitude, or will both be better, or worse than thinkpad's roll cage?

Granted you get what you pay for, but you still need to compare - regardless of the price.

So I'm wondering -- do all the new V3xxx Vostro configs come standard with backlit keyboards?

As far as I know only the highest-end models have backlit keyboards....at least with the 3700.

You could try configuring each model in the highest config. You should be able to see in the basket whether there's a backlit keyboard or not.

Dell has some stupid odd pricing structure going on....

    Vostro 3400

$ - lowest priced system - no backlit keyboard, not selectable, can't choose color
    $$ - mid-low priced system - backlit keyboard, can't choose color
$$$ - mid-high priced system - no backlit keyboard, not selectable, can only select between 2 colors
$$$$ - highest priced system - backlit keyboard, can choose between 3 colors

can't change 6-cell to a 9-cell, you have to buy a whole 'nother battery for $180 if you want the 9-cell.

I'm not sure this is true for the Vostro series, but with my Studio XPS 13 the colors were severely drowned out. Try accessing the Nvidia control panel and go to Adjust Desktop Color Settings and play with the Digital vibrance and hue settings. I left my hues alone but upped the vibrance about 15% and it worked wonders.

The lowest model 3400 does not come with the backlit keyboard - also it doesn't come with an encrypted hard drive or the fingerprint reader. So its not just the backlit keyboard that is the difference. Because of that you also can only go up to a 320GB hard drive and 3GB of memory on the lowest configuration on the 3400. I know cuz I ordered one in mid-march and its supposed to get here April 12th.

You are right! I just took a look and I can confirm this. How about just giving us all the options? :p
