Just testing out my 1400 with the 1440x900 glossy screen. I have only been surfing a little and played a bit with Vista.

So far: nice screen, no grainyness. My IBM T60 is a bit more crisp but darker/duller on the brightest setting compared to this one which is just fine. I adjusted ClearType though and that made a clear improvement.
The rattling battery is a joke, I will have to tape it as everyone else. The design will not make people turn their heads but I think it is ok. Webcam was great.

I DO MISS THE IBM TRACKPOINT... I feel like a slow old man browsing around on the screen. I think the computer I have now is a lot of bang for the buck though.

Will write some more after a couple of days playing with it.

Shouldn't make any noise when opening and closing the screen. At least not that I know of.

Got a vostro 1400 yesterday. Its a samsung panel. Whites look really good but blacks look almost grey.

Should it be like that or should I ring dell for a replacement?

Comparing the screen to my toshiba satellite screen the dell is just not up to scratch.

i just opened up my 1500 the other day - i also have the samsung screen - although i dont really see any "grainyness" - i DO feel like the entire screen is washed out on the default settings

i played with the nvidia control panel a bit - boosted up the contrast a little, lessened the brightness a smidge, and lowered the gamma a bit - that seems to have helped it a little but when looking at some nite photos i took, the pictures are REALLY dark

are there any other settings i should be looking to mess around with? i mean, if it stays like this, i dont think ill be keeping this laptop

im also wondering if there was anyway to turn down the volume (or mute) right before windows boots up - it looks like the volume buttons only work AFTER windows is fully loaded (so you hear the windows entry-music VERY loudly - not very conducive to a so-called "business" machine)...
