The headphone jack definitely is problematic.. but I see the graininess on my screen and it's not much... I have to look for it to notice it.

My main problem now is that the c key has fallen off and it won't attach tightly... so it'll fall out if I press it at the correct angle. Of all the problems haunting dell laptops, I get a bad c key.

I used my latpop for about 3 hours..... I then went to my desktop and OMG, my 22" LCD is like heaven. Big difference when you compare a good screen to a grainy one.

I'm gonna wait a week and call dell and ask them to replace it.

For us Europeans it sucks. I ordered on August 9 and will get it September 25.

They even upped the delivery 3 weeks without notice. First it was supposed to arrive September 3. What is annoying is that they changed pre-production date from August 9 to August 25 too.

I ended up ordering a Vostro 1400 last night for college (which I wont' be going to till the Fall of 2008, but I plan on being in multiple theatrical productions and it saves time to stay at the school instead of going home and coming back...plus, I figured it probably wont' decrease in price that much by summer and it has all the power I want in a laptop.)

I ordered the Vostro 1400 Smart Value package which came to a total of $684.72 after everything. Says it should ship September 10.

It seems like I got a much better deal than some of the people who ordered it when it first came out (though, a couple people seemed to grab onto a half week deal which beats mine). I got the Intel 1.6GHz processor, 2GB Ram, 120GB HD (the core duo package only came with like a 70GB or so), DVD burner (other package was only a CD burner), 9 cell battery. I figured for $50 (actually $25, I split the price with my dad) the extra battery life alone was worth it...the other stuff was a plus.

Anyways, the laptop is a whole lot better than my current main computer (minus the small screen, I have a dual monitor set up on my main computer). I plan on dual boot Gentoo Linux and Vista or XP (I may just stick with Vista since it won't be my primary OS anyways).

You know, why has everyone gotten the Nvidia graphics card and no one has opted for the lesser on-board Intel integrated graphics? It's $99 more to upgrade (at least now).

I spent way more than I really planned to spend on a laptop, since I wanted to build a nice workstation (and still will), but, I figured I might as well get a sturdy laptop that will let me do everything wherever since if I get a noisy room mate, I may not be in my dorm as much anyways :p

So far, I have had no "graininess" on the screen, or any noise from the headphone/mic jack. The one problem I am having however is after the laptop is awoken from its sleep mode, the screen does not come back on. I have to re-start the os every time. Is this a driver or hardware issue? (I have the most recent from LV2G)

I read on another board that Vostro as business computers are exempt from returning withing 30 days if you are not satisfied. Is this true? (btw I live in the UK if that makes a difference).

All you you UK guys, don't pay too much attention to the EMEA and your EDD. My originally EDD was the 31st August, it got set back to the 21st September but on the 29th August it went straight from pre-production to boxing and dispatched couple of hours later.

I'm due to receive it tomorrow so it's only 3 days off the original EDD.

    8X CD/DVD Burner w/ double-layer DVD+R write capability, w/ Roxio Creator

The Roxio Creator is missing from the Vostro 1400 that I just received from Dell. I am pretty upset about this. Will I have to send the notebook back to get this corrected, or will they send someone to me since I purchased the on-site Complete Care deal?

I am not really acquainted with Roxio, etc., but I was looking forward to learning about this and using it..

I would be interested in hearing any ideas anyone might have about this. Thanks very much.
