only real difference between Home basic and home premium: aero glass(ohh ahhh! semi-transparent taskbars) and media center(ohh ahh! i never figured out a use for it on both my desktop and laptop)

about losing DX10 when switching back to XP, it a non-issue. 8400M GS is not powerful enough to play any DX10 games anyways and so doesn't really matter if you lose DX10.

Unless Dell changed their policy about installtion disks in the past month, they do include a clean copy of whatever OS you ordered.

Great specs....money well placed as you can upgrade ram and HD at any time, but the CPU would be a hassle. I may have splurged for a better WWAN card even and 2 years would have been more than enough warranty for me.

WXGA on a 14.1 is really the ideal combination of readability and space utilization. I have it on a 15.4 and it's enough space for web coding and even audio sequencing/multitracking. As for the glossy factor, the only place I notice a different between the two is during movies. Even gaming, you get so involved that you don't notice a lack of contrast. That said, these new "glossy" screens, from what I've seen, aren't as bad glare-wise as some of the older ones.

A better work around would be an ExpressCard card that supports GigE. According to the support site for the Vostro 1400: http://support.dell.com/support/dow...stemID=VOS_N_1400&os=WLH&osl=en&catid=&impid=
on the drivers and download page it has it for a Broadcom 59xx. You could probably call to find out more info. during the week.

Anyone knows if the 8-in-1 card reader has compact flash support ?

Is there an express card compact flash reader?
