like i said, its not a sales rep. this is my replacement unit. its from the precision workstation support team. in the UK we have a dedicated support team only for precisions. they reallllly know these units in and out...

im wondering if its cos of all the issues ppl have been having with fp reader not responding after coming out of sleep etc...i mean he did say he cant disclose stuff...

Interesting to hear ...my FP reader does not respond coming out of sleep, hibernation is no problems; booting is no problems. But that's OK with me! :D

If they're saying they can't do it, then I don't think they really know them in and out, especially since so many of us have fingerprint readers with 64bit systems.

Possibly, but that means it would still work for boot up, system passwords, etc... If you can deal with having to use ctrl-alt-del then swiping your finger out of sleep, who is he to say that you can't have the fingerprint reader?

they're not saying i cant have the reader, they're saying i'll have to install 64bit by myself (they are supplying the cd)

the system wont let them config the fp readers with 64bit. i suppose it'll be like this until they get all the issues worked out.

its a catch 22 isnt it, people are pissed that they wont allow it, but if the did allow it, people would be pissed that its not 100%compatible cos of the out of sleep issues.

if it were my business i'd do the same. not officially endorse,it make it a more of "at your own risk" thing

I agree. I just wish they would allow you to order the system with the components you want and warn you about the problems you may have and even put a big disclaimer in the box telling you that the problem exists and they will not do any customer support for it but will warn you if a solution or update will become available.

Bah, probably too much trouble for them to deal with. In most cases, they probably deal with computer illiterate people who just barely are able to use the applications they need. God bless them. I would probably want to reach through the phone and choke some of those customers sometimes. "what's USB?", "What do you mean I need an internet provider to check my emails?", "Why does my screen turn black every 10 minutes when I leave my computer on?" Oooff... Long day at the office.

    Cheers.

what puzzles me is why on the asian websites it allows the configuration, but not on the UK website etc.

i havent tried the US one so i dunno about tht

also, the system was launched in august. and we're pretty much at the end of the quarter now.

why the HELL hasnt all the software issues been sorted out? this is ridiculous really. even the bios is still messed up. and the version of DCP that supports the intel wifi cards is only gonna be out early next year. its really stupid. i feel like i bought a prototype as my main machine.

its such a crying shame because the hardware is brilliant

Like I posted earlier, I had that issue with the bluetooth minicard (I decided not to get a fingerprint reader). I was on the Canadian website but my laptop was built in the USA and delivered directly from Dell US. While I was able to build my laptop with the bluetooth card, when I finalized my build by phone, that's when I was told of the incompatibility. I thought they would put the card in anyway but no. The laptop came without the card. I suppose it's the same thing for the fingerprint reader; and for the US.

It does not seem to be just a UK problem.

I wasn't aware of these BT and FPR issues...both were ordered with Vista Bus 64 and they never even mentioned anything, nor have I had any problems other than FPR coming out of sleep, in which case I'd key in my password so to me it's really a non issue. I'm in the States, btw.

Did you order online or did you go through a sales rep? I suspect if I had finalized my order online I would not have had that issue. BTW, it's not really a big deal. I am a satisfied m4400 owner. It really is a nice piece of hardware.

How's the weather in Orlando BTW? Here it's currently sunny and 16. ;)

I ordered over the phone...I was pretty firm about what I wanted so maybe he figured it wouldn't do any good to argue with me ;-) Sunny and 16? wow...my uncle in Upper Michigan isn't running around in a Speedo either lol. It's about 74 here now....Sunny, but that what we get for living on a long flat skinny sandbar...:D

    EDIT: agree...nice piece of hardware
